First Review: Medium Season 3

Let me say from the offset I am a fleeting follower of Medium.

I like what I have seen but the premise is something of a stretch for me. A psychic has visions of crimes and manages to neatly piece them together week in, week out. Still it works better than Ghost Whisperer or Supernatural, thanks mostly to the writing and the performances of the leads. It pitches itself to a smarter audience.

So when I sat down for the double-ep that kicks off season three I was doubly surprised, pardon the pun, by how solid it was.

The plot, the performances and particularly the direction were spot on. Watching this story of home break-ins, it isn’t apparent why the producers have inserted continual cartoon sequences. But it’s brilliantly explained.

The show has a deft balance between A, B and C storylines, developing both external plot and character development for the central roles.

And Patricia Arquette and Jake Weber are so wonderfully understated, a bit like Scully and Mulder, but without the sexual tension. Even the kids are good.

I was completely hooked from beginning to end.

Medium premieres Wednesday Jan 31 at 8:30pm on TEN.
