Press Release:

This summer SBS Television presents a series of films shot by the highly acclaimed, multi-award winning Australian cinematographer Christopher Doyle.

Screening on Wednesday, January 2 at 10.00pm is Hero.

Christopher Doyle may be the greatest cinematographer working in film today- perhaps one of the best cinematographers of all time. Doyle is certainly one of the most respected, having worked with Wong Kar-wai (for which he contributed at least partially to the cinematography of all his movies), Zhang Yimou, Edward Yang, Fruit Chan and Zhang Yuan as well as Gus Van Sant, M. Night Shyamalan, Phillip Noyce, Jon Favreau and Barry Levinson outside Asia.

An Australian by birth, Doyle lives and works predominantly in Asia. While his Australian accent is still discernible when he speaks English, he does so with unusual intonations and stops, the result of speaking Cantonese and Mandarin, in which he is fluent, for most of his adult life. He also speaks fluent French. His Chinese name is Du Ke Fung which means `like the wind’.

Doyle’s distinctive and versatile camerawork is the result of a self-taught understanding of his medium and sensitivity to nuances of light, colour and texture. “I have no formal education, so I have to go with what I see as opposed to what I’ve been taught,” says Doyle, whose work stands out most when in collaboration with directors of a similar ilk –Wong Kar-wai, Pen-Ek Ratanaruang and Gus Van Sant, whose latest Cannes award winner, Paranoid Park, Doyle co-shot.
