60 Minutes of cross promotion?

What on earth is going on with 60 Minutes this year?

Their story on incest last week certainly had people talking (and the show has a long history of doing that) even if it did leave out a few “minor” details.

The week before it had a profile piece on the lovely Lisa McCune – tactfully scheduled the day before Sea Patrol II launched.

This weekend there is a story on British naturalist David Attenborough -the day before his series David Attenborough’s Life in Cold Blood airs.

It’s such blatant plugging of Nine product that, regardless of how interesting these may or may not be as celebrity pieces, it diminishes the show’s reputation. And where will it end?

Coming soon? Richard Wilkins on the Perils of Red Carpets. Ed Phillips on How I Spent My Summer Holidays. Eddie McGuire on How I Spent Up On My Summer Holidays.

Press Release:
Cyber Bullies
There’s one in every class. Bullies who make school life a misery for their victims. But these days, there’s no escape. The nightmare never ends. The bullies have gone on-line attacking our kids via their computers and mobile phones. They never let up, they’re at it 24 hours a day. In a number of cases, the torment’s been so pervasive, so evil, it’s ended in tragedy. The desperate young victims committed suicide. And often, parents don’t find out what’s going on until it’s too late. But at last, someone’s standing up to the cyber bullies. Young Australians with their own high tech solution.

Nature’s Gentleman
We know it’s one of those over-worked phrases but this time it’s true. David Attenborough really is a living legend. We have always admired him, so British, so unruffled. So effortlessly bringing the world of nature into our living room. And we are not alone. At last count, his shows had a total audience of 500 million. Now, at the age of 81, Sir David’s about to embark on one last television adventure. Three years in the making, it’s called Life in Cold Blood. An epic series about the secret lives of reptiles, amphibians and other fascinating creatures. But first, the man himself – one of nature’s gentlemen.

The Survivor
After almost 70 years, the wreck has been found, the great maritime mystery solved. And later this month, we’ll pause to remember the 645 men who died when HMAS Sydney was sunk off the West Australian coast back in 1941. It might also be a fitting moment to spare a thought for the fate of her sister ship, HMAS Perth. Another casualty of war, now almost forgotten. But it’s a story well worth commemorating. A saga of survival, valour and mateship. All those qualities that make us who we are. And, it’s also the story of one man who lived through an incredible ordeal to tell this astounding tale.

  1. Yes, I must admit 60 Minutes shouldn’t be used for cross promotion but I don’t think it’s declined that much, last weeks episode for example was great and it still rated 1.56!

  2. Just guessing of course, but their budget would be cut these days wouldnt it? From having reporters in war torn countries all over the world down to a lot of local stories it would suggest lack of money.
I agree wholeheartedly Dave, I tune in but after the run down of stories I usually switch over, it seems so tame these days, even after watching Dateline you cant but wonder what Georgie boy would be thinking of the show these days.
