Airdate: Calling All Aliens

Calling occupants of interplanetary craft?

SBS is screening a two part series on SETI, the search for extra terrestrial intelligence.

Calling All Aliens
is a two part doco looking at a group of scientists and 350 satellite dishes, scouring the skies for ET.

“We know the end result; the actual discovery is going to be so important to our whole civilisation. Not just to science but to our culture, to our technology, to our plans for the future” says Dr Frank Drake.

It will air at 8:30pm Sunday June 22 and 29 on SBS.

Maybe one for that bloke in Big Brother who swore he wasn’t alone?

Press Release:

It is one of the biggest mysteries of our time; Are we alone in the universe? How dangerous would contact with aliens be? What would the consequences of such a discovery be for our lives?

Screening on SBS Television Sunday 22 June at 8:30pm is Calling All Aliens, a two part documentary series that explores the scientific hunt for Extraterrestrial Intelligent Life. “What we are looking for is something like a radio broadcast which is beamed out in space and is pretty much aimed at us” says Dr James Forster, an astronomer who is part of a small group of elite scientists who participate in the Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence (S.E.T.I). They are masters in their fields, brilliant scientists with an unusual mission – tracking down intelligent life forms in space.

Calling All Aliens shows us a world where science and fantasy mingle and where fiction inspires real research. In 2007, the SETI search reached a new dimension with the implementation of 350 satellite dishes, each one measuring six metres in diameter. The world’s most gigantic telescope array ever built will be tuned in to detect the message that could change the world. SETI researchers are looking for a signal that could have been sent from a highly developed civilisation. Sometimes it takes months to get something worth checking out.

Dr Kent Cullers is a physicist who has been working for many years in the search for Extraterrestrial Intelligent Life. One of the most in demand SETI specialists in the world, he is also a consultant for NASA and the International Astronomical Unit (IAU). “The search grows so quickly” says Cullers. “In 50 years we will have gone from searching a few hundred stars to searching the whole galaxy.”

Calling All Aliens gives us behind the scenes access to the desperate yet hopeful believers in Extraterrestrial Intelligent Life. “We know the end result; the actual discovery is going to be so important to our whole civilisation. Not just to science but to our culture, to our technology, to our plans for the future” says Dr Frank Drake, who conducted the first modern scientifically based search for evidence of Extraterrestrial Intelligent Life. “All of these will be impacted in a great way by this discovery.”

  1. I’m into ufology so I’ll be watching this with interest although this is not actually about UFOs.I think SETI is doing some very important work despite their refusal to acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, they have already been here.
