Idol website booming

Australian Idol's website has moved past other rival television shows and become flavour of the month.

Online research site Hitwise claims Australian Idol‘s website has jumped to the top ranking in online TV shows ahead of The World Game on SBS, Nine’s A Current Affair and Seven’s Home And Away.

For what it’s worth, it’s also the top tag clicked on TV Tonight.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Idol‘s online user base is surging over last year’s figures. TENs digital manager, Damian Smith, said that Idol’s unique users had more than doubled to 100,000 in the show’s first two weeks and video viewing was up 65 per cent to 750,000.

Last year Idol generated 7.5 million video streams and the figure is now likely to top 10 million.

Mr Smith and the show’s producer, FremantleMedia, refused to be drawn on their expectations on final numbers.

“Last year’s Idol season was longer than 2008 so it’s possible by season’s end the total growth may be less than [the current rate]. But we’re expecting on a like-for-like basis to see growth for the season.”
