First Karl is supposedly going to ACA. Then he's off to Today Tonight. Next he'll getting hitched to Richard Wilkins.

“We hear that Karl Stefanovic is hosting A Current Affair next year,” said Seven spies yesterday. “Apparently, Leila McKinnon’s been overhead telling a few people at lunch today.”

Really? Leila McKinnon, who fills-in as host of ACA, is of course also wife to Nine boss David Gyngell.

But after this line was circulating to media yesterday, Nine communications man David Hurley went one step better by saying that David Leckie had, in fact, tried to convince Stefanovic to front Today Tonight next year.

Leckie apparently dined Stefanovic at his house but failed at luring the Today show host.

“The play for him was over the top, dinner at Leckie’s place, the whole bit,” Hurley told news.com.au

“For them to start these rumours of an ACA move is a piece of towering dishonesty which has now exploded in his and Seven’s face,” he fumed.

Seven’s 6:30 public affairs show wins every night, but can’t seem to shake off issues with the host, no matter who is in the chair. Meanwhile Tracy Grimshaw is the best thing about A Current Affair.

  1. i really like tracey totally agree with leith. She is a very good journo but because of her age ACA is all she will get.

    I thought nine had it all sorted i read in last weeks Sunday Telegraph,

    Tracey is a journo who needs 60 minutes she is the quality of 60 minutes and all the good journos go to 60 minutes,

    Indemand for what ?

    Opening act at comedy club !
    Doing an infomercial
    Handing out leaflets at shopping centres.

    Karl and quite afew “talking heads” come across to me as having zero warmth and just look smug.

    They appear more interested in ‘being the story’ rather than telling the story.
    And heaven forbid, that they should rock the boat and ask the hard questions.

  8. I’ve always seen Tracey and ACA as one of those famous sporting celeb couples, where some reasonably attractive girl with more than enough intelligence to know better, dates some yobbo who constantly embarrasses himself. She could do so much better!

    I’ve seen first hand how good she is at live TV, the woman doesn’t miss a beat and usually ignores the autocue to either re-phrase or add her own two cents. Her interviews are almost flawless too, clearly having researched the topic to the point where she can throw a question at the talent no matter which way they take the interview. But because she’s 40+ and female, this is probably the best gig she’ll be given. Meanwhile certain male “journos” have outstayed their welcome and continue to do so for some time.

  9. It’s funny how the hosts of TT always get tarnished. The show always drags them down and in the case of Naomi made her a punchline and ruined her career. Never seems to happen with ACA but that could be the classier hosts or the fact that it never sinks to the muck raking depths that TT does.

  10. Are they for real, Karl Stefanovic in demand? He is the reason why I don’t watch today, his personality is terrible and he has no interview skills. No wonder the networks are stuggling in providing good quality current affairs, if they see this joker as the best of what is on offer for a host. The best thing they could do with Karl is put him behind the camera and make sure he doesn’t speak.

    What is going on with the TV media! The quality of hosts sure has dropped, I mean look at poor old Tracy Grimshaw, she isn’t a bad host but somebody needs to do her hair for her, she is looking like a clown.

  11. You are right David that Tracey Grimshaw is the best thing about ACA, but thats not saying much, the rest of it is to woeful to watch, shes actually a decent journo, I dont know how she sleeps at night hosting that crap..

  12. I smell an a current affairs story from this. Maybe Leckie had secret cameras and microphones in place in his house, and the evidence will be on TT?? Or even the other way around, more ammunition for 9?? Don’t say it isn’t possible.

  13. God they are all like a bunch of school yard kids trying to get one over eachother. How about you networks concentrate on giving the public some quality programing for a change? How about entertaining us with smart, funny and likable shows instead of the host dominated reality programes that annoy?

    Lift your game all of you, who the hell cares about who hosts dodgy current affairs shows. Get some new young writers in and develop some entertaining sitcomes, drama and suspense shows. The UK leaves you (7,9,10) for dead in the quality stakes.
