Returning: Californication

Lock up your conservative politicians, David Duchovny is back next month.

Quick, go and alert conservative lobby groups and politicians… David Duchovny is coming back to screen.

The second series of Californication returns to TEN on Sunday October 5 at 10:10pm. It will replace the first series of Dexter.

To be “Seriously fastracked” by TEN, it airs following its US return on September 28th.

The first season of the Showtime drama attracted considerable criticism for its racy themes and raunchy scenes -a strategy that usually plays into the hands of the network and boosts ratings.

But TEN was also found to be in breach of the ACMA Code of Practice over episode ten of the first series. ACMA found the editing of “The Devil’s Threesome,” by TEN was not sufficent for it to screen in the MA classification, the category that allows the strongest material to be screened.

Meanwhile actor David Duchovny recently admitted himself into rehab over his reported addiction to web porn.

  1. Interesting to note that David Duchovny, star of Californication, and husband and father of 3 kids, is now himself undergoing therapy for sexual addiction. It might be interesting to ask him his views on pornography in the mass media.

  2. I’ve heard this argument of “every man his own censor” since I was 15-I’m now 59. The fact is, that if we allow lots of violence, pornography, drug-taking etc to be constantly fed to impressionable people, (ie normalise it), then some of them will take it up. I noticed when arranging a neighbourhood BBQ, that any home I visited, even towards sunset, they had the security screen door locked (and ours is a quiet Canberra suburban street). I guess the reason is that you can’t negotiate with a drug-crazed home invader. The more we normalise these abberrant behaviors, the more we must expect them to be part of our daily lives. If you think these things are good, talk to the Salvation Army people who have to deal with the messy end of this stuff. These things pollute the pond we all have to swim in, and make it a harder and more scary place to raise kids.

  3. I’ve just watched the first two episodes of Season 2 and at the moment, I reckon Ten will censor the season opener as there is a scene not like the one that they censored earlier (however in this context, it’s a twosome), as well as some full frontal female nudity.

I’ll still watch the Ch10 airing to see if they’ve cut anything.

  4. sillygostly, i doubt it will be in HD every week, coz dexter hasn’t been most times, although i don’t know much about what will be happening with the racing, maybe it’ll be over by then. but still don’t count on it, not on a sunday.

  5. Jack — I compared Ten’s hackjob to the unedited version back when it first aired on Ten. It was a lot more than two seconds. It wasn’t just the “money shot” that was edited. Since it was also intercut with Karen and Marcie, I’d say there were at least ten different shots cut in some way — a thrust here, a camera pan there, etc.

…And as stated by another posted, the DVD is completely uncut at MA15+. What’s the use of duplicating the OFLC ratings (even down to the awful colour coded logos) if you’re not going to play by the same rules?

It’s bad enough that “MA” seems to vary wildly between TV and DVD, but it’s made worse by the fact that Foxtel seem to be able to do whatever they like — not only can Foxtel air MA content whenever they like (which I would argue should also apply to digital-only channels like ABC2 and TenHD, since they have the same ‘parental lockout” systems), but half the time they just slap an MA on R rated content and make no cuts.

Come to think of it, why isn’t there an appeals process for ACMA rulings like there is with OFLC rulings? Where’s the review board? Where’s the accountability?

  6. Jack, the edit was brutal in that it was the hasty editing of a scene that resulted in the entire scene not making sense in context, and in fact seeming more gratuitous than it actually was as a result. The ACMA judgement about the Code of Practice breach is evidence of that.

Sillygostly, the Christian fundy right is not so entrenched in mainstream politics and mainstream media that they get what they want every time simply by wailing. My response is always to obtain and watch that which they don’t want me to have. That’s the responsibility of every good atheist and all others who don’t believe in magic fairies at the bottom of the garden.

  7. The Devil’s Threesome wasn’t the only episode that was censored by Ten. Ten have also censored the recaps of the last two episodes of the season (of “that” scene from The Devil’s Threesome).

What the f*** happened to Australia being a secular country that Christian lobbyists are dictating what we can and can’t watch?!

Since it’s being “fast tracked”, I’ll consider watching it in HD though, however if there’s any indication of censorship, I WILL download the episodes. >:(

  8. I’m looking forward to seeing it again but it’s a shame to hear it’s been edited. I really need to buy the DVD’s of the first season and see just how much channel 10 cut out. Considering it’s on after 10pm this time, I didn’t think they’d have to edit it at all. I’ve certainly seen worse things on TV. Some of the content in channel 7’s midday movies is absolutely unsuitable for the timeslot. Shows after 10pm should be left unedited.

  9. While it’s great that Ten are “seriously fasttracking” the show, this is one time the torrents will be viewed. Ten admit that they “seriously edited” the show for our viewing pleasure. I’ll that the original please.

  10. Yes exactly, Ryan – and remember, the version that Ten screened was already brutally edited to “reduce the impact” of the scene in question – a scene which was harmless, very funny and which made little sense (and was arguably MORE gratuitous) in Ten’s edited version.

I don’t trust the religious nutter lobbyists. I’ll be downloading this one.

  11. WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!! I love CALIFORNICATION.

I just don’t understand how TEN got in trouble for airing the show in the slot that wasn’t sufficient for ep 10 despite it being classified MA when the DVD set is classified MA…. makes no sense….

Anyway, I can’t wait, I made my way through Season 1 DVD in no time at all.

  12. I understand people being upset with the content of the show but they don’t have to watch them! I’ve seen the first 2 eps of the new season and ch10 might have a hard time editing things down. I don’t want an edited version, so I will probably get this from the US, not waiting for the DVD to see it unedited.

  13. Excellent News!! Loved the first season and have been waiting to see whether 10 would fast track it and show it(even if it s a few weeks after the US, heaps better than next year). 🙂
