The early news on TEN

Despite the rumours, TEN says it isn't looking to take on Sunrise or Today.

Network TEN has denied rumours it is planning a morning breakfast show to rival Sunrise, Today and the new ABC2’s Breakfast.

Network insiders said a pilot for the program had already been shot in Sydney with network’s early news finance presenter Kathryn Robinson. Earlier this month The Age reported Bill Woods filmed a pilot for a new-look early morning News programme.

But a TEN spokeswoman yesterday told news.com.au was shooting for the regular 6am bulletin and wasn’t looking to dump its morning kids line-up.

But an unnamed rival said, “You can’t do cheap television the way TEN want to do it in this timeslot.”

That’s true enough. For the figures some morning television gets, it’s a surprisingly big investment.

The TEN News spokeswoman said speculation over the show could have surfaced from the shuffling of the station’s news set. The network’s 11am, 6pm and late night bulletins have currently been sharing a set, due to a rebuild.

“We’ve introduced a lounge for interviews for the 11am bulletin and maybe someone’s seen that and thought it was for a breakfast show,” the publicist said.

  1. Can you imagine ALL networks have same philosphy (network programming chimps)

3.30 am to 5 am US morning talk shows – Today, GMA, Early show
5 am to 6 am early edition of own breakfast shows – news, news, more news, loads of weather reports (sometimes 4 times inside 25 mins)

6 Am to 9 am – Breakfast shows – all with same format (Yawn) 2 talking co hosts – trying to be best mates, Sports yokel, weather reporter someone on the road and the obligatory Celebrity/Gossip scandal guy (who could just as easily be Joe Blow reading from NY Post,Perez Hilton sites..

9 am to 11 am – Morning shows – again prefer 2 talking heads, one male, one female

Variety is spice of life, unless you are Network Programming Chimp

  2. Please leave the cartoons on Ten in the morning. We don’t have Foxtel in our bedroom, so it’s slim pickings when we first wake up. Today and Sunrise are as terrible as each other. I’d rather watch Pokemon than Kochie and Mel or Lisa and Karl…. and I’m decades older than the cartoon demographic.

  3. I hope TEN don’t cut off the morning cartoons anytime soon. When I was in primary school I always watched in the morning and it was a staple of sorts of my television viewing lol.

But the cartoons are good because they suit primary school kids whereas the kid shows on ABC are more for kids under 6.
