David Tennant to exit Dr. Who

Sob! David Tennant will vacate the role of the tenth Doctor after 2009.

This is gonna hurt.

David Tennant is leaving Doctor Who after 2009.

He made the announcement at the UK’s National Television Awards to the screams of disappointed fans.

Tennant said “I’ve had the most brilliant, bewildering and life-changing time working on Doctor Who. I have loved every day of it. It would be very easy to cling on to the Tardis console for ever and I fear that if I don’t take a deep breath and make the decision to move on now, then I simply never will.”

Tennant took up the role as the tenth incarnation of the Doctor in 2005, after a short stint by Christopher Eccleston. He has been widely lauded for the zest he has brought to the character.

His departure follows earlier announcements by writer Russell T. Davies that he too is to exit.

“I’ve been lucky and honoured to work with David over the past few years,” said Davies, “and it’s not over yet. The tenth Doctor still has five spectacular hours left, after which I might drop an anvil on his head. Or maybe a piano. A radioactive piano.”

  1. Ha! Heck, YES he will be a hard act to follow! David Tennant is the best actor I have ever seen on the show. Wow, he will be missed. I’m so sad that he’s leaving, not to mention that they got a pale-faced freakazoid to play the eleventh Doctor.
    Have you seen Matt Smith????

  2. I knew it had to happen but I’m sad to see him go too. He was great.

Jack!… “my biggest concern is that they somehow resolve the idea of River Song who knew the 10th Doctor when he was “… much older…” .. ”

well there is another Doctor growing older in a parallel world…

I’d like River to come back though, I thought she was a great new character.

  3. I hope they get an older actor for the next incarnation. As much as I liked David Tennant, I really felt he was too young. I’ve seen the old William Hartnell episodes on DVD and I like the idea of a cranky old Doctor Who.

  4. Wow! It is so wonderful to see so many people so passionate about this show that started loving way back in 1975!!!! (when I was 1 … 😉 )…

Marco: I also am intrigued that the christmas special “The Next Doctor” could be revealing the answer … they certainly knew he was leaving back then.

Tony: Would not surprise me one bit if the Master returns in the final special for next year … he will definitely be back in some form at some time.

As for Eccleston … (Doctor Nine) … I always felt betrayed by his quick departure and lack of promotion for the program … but it turned out to be the best thing because we got David Tennant … the best Doctor of all (maybe???) …

Companions??? I doubt there will be one companion throughout the specials … i do think that we will see a return of The Doctor’s Daughter in one of them … my biggest concern is that they somehow resolve the idea of River Song who knew the 10th Doctor when he was “… much older…” .. and the just MUST get Donna back for at least 1 special!!!!

Finally, if anyone is interested go to the Dr Who Club of Vic website: http://www.dwcv.org.au or email the magazine editors on: [email protected]

    Jack!

  5. Tennant will be hard to top as the Doctor, but I for one think that changing the actor every few year keeps the show fresh. The fans freak out with every new assistant, and end up loving her just as much as the previous one! The same will happen with the new Doctor.
