Returning: Stupid, Stupid Man.

After Very Small Business ends, ABC will bring back another season of his 'men's mag' comedy. And a second serve of Chris Lilley.

Wayne Hope is certainly having a good year at the ABC

The final episode of Very Small Business goes to air tonight. Next week ABC will bring the second series of the TV1 comedy set in a men’s magazine editorial, Stupid, Stupid Man.

Hope and Robyn Butler are also preparing a second season of The Librarians.

Returning in the comedy next week are Matthew Newton, Bob Franklin, Chris Leaney, Leah Vandenberg and Sophie Katinis. Guest stars in the first ep include Stephen Curry, Deborah Mailman and Leo Sayer.

It airs 9pm Wednesday on ABC1 followed by a repeat season of Summer Heights High. Sorry, Rangas.

Press Release:

Welcome back to the manic offices of Coq! – the men’s magazine for today’s man.

This second, eight-part series of Stupid Stupid Man – set in the office of a fictional men’s magazine called Coq! (French for rooster) – examines the lives of the editorial team comprising four blokes struggling for the right to express their ‘blokedom’ in an increasingly sensitive society, juxtaposed with strong female characters in senior management, and a P.A. with attitude.

Their contrasting personalities and the conflict between high journalistic ideals and the grubby reality of men’s magazines, twists these characters increasingly out of shape.

Office life revolves around Carl Van Dyke (Wayne Hope), a middle-aged editor who would rather work for Time magazine; Carl is trying to maintain journalistic integrity in the fleshy nether world of lingerie shoots.

His team comprises the charming features writer Nick (Matthew Newton); self-doubting advice columnist Dave (Bob Franklin); and the shy but committed copy boy Ross (Chris Leaney). While trying to put out a monthly magazine, the blokes have to contend with their wily and demanding boss Anne (Leah Vandenberg), and Carl’s feisty P.A. Tina (Sophie Katinis).

In Appearances Are Everything, Carl appoints a new fashion editor who’s rude, arrogant, sexist and disabled. Meanwhile, Nick considers settling down after he starts seeing a blind woman, and Carl gets more than happy gas while visiting the dentist.

Tonight’s guest stars are Stephen Curry, Deborah Mailman and Leo Sayer.

Stupid Stupid Man will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, October 16 at 8:30pm

  1. I didnt think much of last weeks episode, probbaly because I thought Stephen Currys performance was much worse than anything else I’ve seen him in

but last nights episode!! poooeeey! what a stinker!!!

  2. Oh, full marks for last night’s episode. Near priceless, and actually better than anything in the first series. David – has the writing team changed ?

  3. The second series of Stupid Stupid Man was on Foxtel ages ago and we have been waiting for the thrid series if there is one. I have not seen any current information about what is happening with any future development of this show which we have enjoyed immensely and has brought out several diverse talents of a number of actors.
Is there any future series planned?

  4. i think people yave been a little unfair with Matthew Newton, yes what he did was very wrong and in no way excusable(never ever hit a woman ever) but he is a good performer and a good actor.

I think people should cut him some slack now, i’m sure he’s delt with some demons and inner turmoil. If ben cousins and many other fool footballers are given second, third and forth chances Mathew deserves another one.

This show is good and Matthew is one of the main reasons this show works so well.

  5. I think Newton was signed up for the second season before the personal bruhaha. Promos for repeats of “Thank God You’re Here” don’t feature him at all. Will his career get back on track?
