Brayshaw handballed Sunday Footy

Sports presenter Tony Jones has been dropped from the Sunday Footy Show. But is it just to make way for Eddie McGuire?

Nine Melbourne’s long serving sports presenter Tony Jones (pictured) has been dropped as host of The Sunday Footy Show in favour of the (AFL) Footy Show‘s James Brayshaw.

Jones, who has hosted the show since 2006, will remain as GTV’s chief sports presenter on Nine News.

Network insiders told the Herald Sun Jones was not happy losing the Sunday role, but Jones said he was “very comfortable” with the decision.

“I’ve spoken to James Brayshaw and told him he’ll have a ball doing it, just like I did,” Jones said. “The worst thing is my workload has been cut back from six days to five.”

But the move will fuel speculation that Eddie McGuire could be brought back to the Footy Show fold. Could Brayshaw have been given the Sunday edition in a move to reinstate McGuire who is without a regular programme whilst earning a mighty network salary? Garry Lyon already has Footy Classified hosting.

McGuire might also be able to rein in Sam Newman whose year on the show was his most troubled yet.

  1. Please Eddie – come back to The Footy Show.

Gary Lyon and James Brayshaw – they just don’t have it. I have watched the show since it first aired. Love the footy and what it brings to our great city – but it needs help – it’s needs professionalism and a return focus to Footy. Although many cried “Conflict of Interest” it was the fact that you were the Magpie president and have such a passion for Aussie Rules that made it all work. I know you say Gary and JB need to make it their own but for the love of God Eddie – you know you’re the ticket!!!

  2. Big mistake. The Footy show works a lot better without McGuire. In fact, they should get rid of Sam Newman as well. He hasn’t been funny for years. The only way he keeps in the headlines now, is by being “controversial”. He knows it too.

The best Footy shows I have seen in a long time were the 4 shows that Billy Brownless sat in for Newman.

I will not be watching it again if McGuire is back as host. Actually, I wont watch anything that McGuire host…

  3. Seems to be the logical reason – consider that Ed was pulling a huge Sal in 2008 without being on TV or being an executive.

Eddie as an exec reminds me of that episode of Cheers where Sam Malone is hired as an exec so that he can join the company softball team!

  4. No! Tony Jones is a great host and one of the reasons I prefer the sunday edition to the thursday one. Bicks was leaving anyway, why couldn’t Brayshaw just fill in for him instead of usurping Jones?

Bloody JB is everywhere; Footy Shows, WWOS, even making stupid comments at the Twenty20. He just needs to host a game show and Nine will have a second Eddie on their hands! That being said, I do miss my thursday night “Eddie Bear”, would be nice for him to come back to the show he pretty much built.

  5. interesting. hope they do bring eddie back as the footy show is not the same without him. I like james and gary but at times i think eddie would be better hosting.

sam is sam he’ll do what he does best. Go eddie i say.

  6. I’ve got to admit I don’t mind the idea of Eddie coming back to The Footy Show but could Nine afford to lose the dynamic of Garry Lyons and James Brayshaw and how well they run the show?
