iQ2Go stick allows Foxtel downloads

Foxtel subscribers will be able to download shows via the internet for playback on a new messagestick, dubbed iQ2Go.

Foxtel subscribers will soon be able to download programs on demand using the internet, and also transfer these programs to other devices via a USB memory stick, to be called iQ2Go.

The iQ2Go will have a capacity of 16 gigabytes with strict digital rights management to ensure programs cannot be copied and or used by non-subscribers.

The changes, due to be introduced in the first half of 2009, were revealed yesterday by CEO Kim Williams.

Existing Foxtel set-top boxes are already technically capable of broadband connectivity, using either ethernet or USB connection ports, although both will remain disabled until the launch of the service.

Mr Williams said Foxtel customers would not have to be Telstra BigPond internet customers to use the service, but Foxtel did not yet have any agreements for these program downloads to be unmetered, or not counted in customers’ download limits.

The iQ2Go will allow for high-definition video playback on laptops and other devices.

  1. Er…. So why would people stop downloading movies?

Iq2Go has been in the works for years! Foxtel cant even get the serial link working for the “free to air” channels. (“Not enough room to store the serial link data”, but yet, they can add extra HD channels and extra features…..)

  2. …aaand of course Telstra Bigpond will be delighted to slug their un-tech-savvy users $150 per gigabyte for the privilege.

This country needs a Telstra enema.

  3. From what I understand, is this only for on demand shows like… – well I can’t recall any free on demand shows I’ve wanted to watch.

What about normally recorded and stored shows on iQ? When will we be able to transfer those to our computers to watch, ala TiVo?
