Mad about the Men (and Chris Lilley)

Mad Men star January Jones reckons she can't get enough of Summer Heights High.

American actress January Jones from Mad Men and John Slattery added a touch of Hollywood to the AFI Red Carpet, in Australia to promote the second series of their acclaimed drama.

Jones said the series has succeeded because of its point of difference to American cop dramas.

“I think that’s what makes the show, the writing of the show. It’s beautiful, unique, it’s very smart and not predictable so it’s something different from what we’ve seen in the States, at least for a while. So I think that’s why we’ve gotten a good response.”

When it comes to Aussie television, she had her hopes set on meeting Chris Lilley.

“The only show I’ve seen is Summer Heights High,” she said. “I’m a huge fan. It just started running a couple of months ago in the States, it’s hilarious. I can’t wait to meet him.

“The humour translates, definitely. But we’ve stolen a lot of your shows, Kath & Kim…”

Jones also told TV Tonight that Mad Men’s scenes buried in thick smoke were strictly under the eyes of the union.

“The cigarettes we smoke on the show are herbal, they’re not nicotine or tobacco. There’s a union law that you can’t. And with the amount of cigarettes we smoke per day, we’d all be dead.”

Mad Men’s second season returns December 14 on Movie Extra.

  1. on top of that mike brearly, in the Healrd Sun tv guide’s article this weekend which feature mad men, it called it a crime drama… wtf is with people not understanding the show’s concept. Is tv so stuck into a few tiny pigeon holes people have to assume every show they don’t know well must be one of them.

Mad Men isn’t a cop drama. Watch the show, DK, you’ll love it.
