Nine to screen Oscars live to air

Hurrah! For the first time on Australian television, we're going to get the Academy Awards live as they happen in Hollywood.

The Nine Network is giving us what we’ve always wanted: the Academy Awards LIVE to air.

Next February Nine will air the Oscars at 12 noon live from Hollywood, following a Red Carpet special.

It is the first time in history the ceremony will screen live in Australia. Previously movie fans have had to wait until the evening version, including trying their darndest not to hear any spoilers.

Nine will also screen the event in primetime later that night, possibly in a shortened, packaged version (to be confirmed).

Nine Programmer Michael Healy, said: “We are thrilled to bring the Oscars live from Hollywood to all Australian viewers, giving audiences the opportunity of seeing their favourite stars collect their Awards as it actually happens.”

Pay TV channels have previously been airing live award ceremonies as they happen including the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Emmy Awards, Grammy Awards and the Tonys.

The Nine Network today announced that for the first time in Australian television history, the 81st
Academy Awards® will screen live on free-to-air television in 2009.

Viewers will have the chance to watch all the glitz and glamour of the 81st Academy Awards® from the Kodak Theatre live on Channel Nine on Monday, February 23, 2009.

Nine’s live coverage will commence with all the excitement of the red carpet arrivals at Hollywood’s night of nights, followed by a live broadcast of the official ceremony from 12.00pm noon.

As per tradition, the Academy Awards® will also screen on Nine in prime time that evening.

Nine Network Director of Programming, Michael Healy, said: “We are thrilled to bring the Oscars live from Hollywood to all Australian viewers, giving audiences the opportunity of seeing their favourite stars collect their Awards as it actually happens.”

  1. i am sooooo happy that the oscars are going to share this tinseltown event live to all aussies!! the only thing im not happy about is the lack of advertising of when the oscars were on … it had to take me to find this website to know wat was going on!!

  3. I’ll be watching it – well, I’ll tape it because I won’t be home. I’m usually not into these award things but with great entertainment this year apparently – Beyonce, Zac Efron, Hugh Jackman hosting, and not to mention Robert Pattinson believed to be presenting an award – I will make sure I catch it.

  4. Wow, congrats, finally to an australian free to air channel for moving to the 21st century.

    Not that nine does many clever things, but you’d think this one would be a no brainer.

    We’re a globalized world, sadly something many australian media and businesses would love to stop us from enjoying.

  5. Now, who really gives a **** whether it is aired in HD or not? I mean, big friggin deal if it is or isn’t- at least it is being aired LIVE for the first time.

  6. Glad I work from home as well! About time. Ridiculous having to wait and be in media and internet blackout for 8 hours or so waiting for PrimeTime. Best news my wife has heard all day!

  9. Dr Rudi – there’s no way Nine could show a live, unedited Red Carpet segment featuring Richard Wilkins. I’ve had the pleasure (?) of seeing his unedited work come straight off the satelitte in previous Oscars!!

  11. I hate how when they air these award shows on aussie tv that they always edit out awards. Also they never have any logic to what they remove. Last academy awards they edited out major categories, including best international picture.
    Last emmys there was no logic, some awards shown with no shows airing on aussie tv, where as categories with several were not.

  13. No, not pay TV, there are usually events in Oz but it involves getting a satellite feed from the US. NW magazine did a lunchtime one this year. I think they just invited sponsors and celebrities. Not plebs like us. 🙂 Not sure how this will rate but showing it delayed ffects viewer numbers so they might as well do it if they can.

  20. That’s very good news! The Oscars have been shown live in my hometown of Hong Kong for more than a decade on local English-language station TVB Pearl (and replayed at night). However, every second year or so, only the first two hours of the ceremony were (and still are) able to be shown live to air because Pearl must show primary and secondary education programs at noon. TVB has been persuading the local Education Department to relax the rule so it can show the Oscars live in full, to no avail.

  25. from memory the ratings for this in primetime were dissapointing. so i guess everyone wins here.

    will it be replayed in primetime.

    i hope the emmys are not at midnight again this year on ten
