Happy Australia Day 2009.

Today in the Australia Day Honors a number of Media and Arts personalities are amongst those recognised.

And Justice Sackville, best known for his hearing of the notorious C7 pay-TV “mega-litigation,” was recognised “for service to the administration of the Australian judicial system, to the reform of federal and state law and to legal education”.

Scriptwriter Geoffrey Atherden is best known for creating the ABC’s hit series Mother and Son, plus Grass Roots while actor Rebel Penfold-Russell who appeared in Prisoner also went on to become a producer of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Brian Henderson, who holds the record for the longest serving newsreader in Australia, has received the honour for his service as a pioneer in the television news and entertainment sectors.

The honour also acknowledges his service as a mentor to aspiring and established presenters, readers and journalists.

A delighted Henderson said it was very “unexpected”.

“I retired six years ago, you would have thought if there was going to be any sort of award it would probably happen as I finished up,” Henderson said.

“But six years on, I’m surprised.”

  1. >>>What about all the volunteers out there – Life saving,,St.johnsambulance,firebrigade.

    They have awards too.

See all 752 awards announced yesterday.

  2. I realise that David. It justseems that”honors’ go to more high profile people in media and sports than in other areas. And if it is the entertainment industry what about the “cameramen” runners” “boom operators etc.
then we have fact that”other workers say plumbers, teachers, electricians, nurses, charity workers..
Dont’ see awards for service to plumbing or check out chicks registry do we ?
I just think awards are too heavily based on profile rather than community service.
I reckonwe could mount a case to give Order of Australia to Jules Lund for service to televsiion if he promised to get off it.

    1. Actually Honours are awarded for community service above and beyond what’s required in one’s employment. So if a cameraman did something for the community that was extra (ie. devoting years to an archive museum for example) they could be recognised. About 90% of the Honours are for “non profile” people. The good thing is, anyone can nominate anyone through the application channels. Go for it!

  3. Sorry folks but this is a joke – For service to the entertainment industry.
What about all the volunteers out there – Life saving,,St.johnsambulance,firebrigade.
Might as well give awards to newspaper reporters too and paperazzi and film reviewers…
