SBS transmission upgrade coming

If you have high definition reception and watch SBS this one's for you.

SBS will begin an Australia wide upgrade to their Digital service on January 29, to increase the resolution of its High Definition program and provide 7 day Electronic Program Guide information.

The upgrade will allow SBS the capability of providing different service offerings into metropolitan and regional areas.

Some viewers may lose their ability to view SBS services on the normal channels. SBS advises these viewers should set their receiver back to default mode and rescan.  All viewers capable of viewing High Definition programsshould rescan their receiver.

The primary change is a move from broadcasting to 7 different markets to broadcasting to 12 different markets allowing SBS to tailor programming and advertisements to local market areas.

SBS’ HD transmission format has already changed from 576p to 720p.

  1. Well my SD-only SBS signal has suddenly improved to the point where it’s watchable – down low in a hilly area has always made the analogue signal very grainy and the digital signal intermittent. Could this be due to this upgrade? Because weirdly it seems to have happened a couple of days early…

  2. So 3 channels of news then?
Perhaps one will be 24/7 WeatherWatch.

And the new regioning better be just for ads. The last thing we need is SBS showing different shows to different states.

  3. @neon kitten: “move the watermark to the corner…”

its so true! ch 9 have there watermark in what looks to be closer to the centre of the screen then the edge! ch 10 and ch 7 are good, they have theirs right in the corners. Im sure the number of viewers of HD channels with a widescreen tv greatly outnumber those with a standard tv. Even alot of the old analogue tv sets come with a widescreen.

  4. Technical data on TV Tonight. Awesome 😀

Seriously, though, this is good news, as long as SBS sources HD masters of shows produced in that format. Who knows, Australia could have the new season of Skins in HD before the UK does…!

Just one request, SBS. On the HD channel, move the watermark to the corner of the 16:9 frame. Nobody with an old-school TV will be watching that channel. Don’t worry; it’s safe. Your spam will still be seen.
