Vale: Kim Manners

Highly regarded director of Supernatural and The X Files, Kim Manners, passes away after a battle with cancer.

kimmanners1Supernatural and former X Files producer / director Kim Manners has died following a battle with cancer, aged 58.

Considered a key creative force on both shows, Manners directed every season finale of Supernatural and the season premieres for the last three years.

Supernatural creator & executive producer Eric Kripke issued a statement: “Everyone at Supernatural is walking around in a daze, shocked and absolutely devastated. Kim was a brilliant director; more than that, he was a mentor and friend. He was one of the patriarchs of the family, and we miss him desperately. He gave so much to Supernatural, and everything we do on the show, now and forever, is in memory of him.”

Former X-Files writer Frank Spotnitz said, “Kim had a blazing intensity that inspired everyone — writers, producers, actors and crew. ‘Kick it in the [expletive]!’ he’d say to us. And ‘I love you,’ really meaning it. As long as he’d been a director, he never lost his passion for his work…. Kim was an incredible force of life. It is hard for me to believe or accept that he is gone.”

Manners directed 52 episodes of The X Files, 17 eps of Supernatural plus other television including Charlie’s Angels and 21 Jump Street.

Manners last-directed episode of Supernatural was last episode was Season 4’s “Metamorphosis.”

  1. Kim’s passing was a big shock for me and other fans who didn’t know he had cancer. His loss will be felt throughout the SPN fan community but I especially feel for the cast and crew who worked closely with Kim. In the interviews, audio commentaries, gag reels etc, they seem like just a close-knit group.
Rest In Peace, Kim. I’ll miss your close-ups.

  2. RIP – Kim.
Being such a huge contributer to The X-Files, a fave show of alltime of mine, it was huge shock to hear of his passing.
    Thanks for your legacy.

  3. The official discription issued by The CW prior to airing also had Mr Manners as the director of the ep, indeed the description on the CW Supernatural page still shows the director extraodinaire as the boss, just one of those things where circumstances overtake the norm….

    Beware Spoiler below!

  4. Supernatural fans are still in shock and devastated…. imagine how cast members must be feeling…
We will remember this very talented man with fond affection with every episode of SN we watch.

  5. A great loss to the world (in general & to SPN). Kim Manners directed many of my favourite episodes of The X Files and Supernatural. He is, actually, my favourite TV director and every time his name popped up in the opening credits I was prepared for some interesting viewpoints.

“Manners last-directed episode of Supernatural was “Family Manners” episode 11 of Season 4.”

The title is “Family Remains” 😉 , but Kim Manners didn’t direct it. That was Phil Sgriccia. Manners’ last directed episode of SPN was “Metamorphosis”.
