Airdate: Thursday Night AFL

Several changes from TEN for AFL, Life on Mars, Ice Road Truckers and its Monday night schedule.

jason-omara-life-on-mars-photoNext Thursday Feb 26th TEN has an AFL pre-season match between Collingwood and Richmond to air delayed at 8:30pm (Melb).

This means Law and Order: SVU and Life on Mars are out for the night but the latter is replaced with two episodes at 9:30pm / 10:30pm on March 5th (until they decide that’s a waste and change it again).

In other network changes, TEN has back-tracked on plans for Ice Road Truckers (again) replaced with films on Saturday 28th with Center Stage, then Kiss the Girls. It is still in schedule for this Saturday.

And disappointingly TEN is back to its old tricks on Monday nights, stretching the verdict edition of So You Think You Can Dance to 70 minutes, meaning Good News Week and Dexter will be ten minutes later.

  1. I would say there are going to be some frustrated Tasmanian football fans on Thursday night when they find out TDT is the only station airing the Richmond vs Collingwood game.

If you don’t have a set top box, and plenty don’t because they haven’t got around to it or the signal is still not being transmitted to their area, it will create a complete blackout of the match.

  2. I just want to add my voice to the comments here re: Channel Nine and Seven rubbery start times – back in the day ACA used to have 3 stories and one preview, nowadays there’s 20 stories before the first commercial break and suddenly the whole night is pushed out by 10 minutes.

The end result is if you’re watching Seven or Nine at 7.30 then flick over to Ten at 8.30 you suddenly realise that it’s 8.40 and you’ve missed the first 10 minutes of the show.

Ten have bore the brunt of criticism over this overrun practice for years because of Big Brother and other live fare but Nine and Seven have been far more clandestine about it and have turned the traditional switch-on points into a farce.

  3. Yes, I too congratulate 10 for keeping their EPG up to date unlike 7 and 9. Being on time could be one reason why 10 is rising this year. 10’s EPG is usually correct to the minute. Have made enough comment on this subject in the week 8 ratings thread!

Separate, but similar subject, American Idol went for 2 hours last night for 12 contestants singing. Take out the unecessary padding, meaningless comments that go on too long, the coming up after the break promos, and the ads itself, I watched the show in about 40 minutes.

  4. I know they run on schedule because they need (want?) to start their 6pm news at exactly 6pm (or it was like that back in 1996 when I visited Ch 9 in Richmond and I was told that by their presentation department) – after that though, it seems the gloves are off..

  5. You are right Zambora, it is only ever after 7:00 pm. During the day, they are right on schedule. It starts with ACA and TT which ends at 7:02 pm every single weeknight. They are deliberately running two minutes late, it is a very conscious move. It just flows on from there. Two weeks ago, Customs finished at 8:41 pm. Nine then showed a two minute preview of Underbelly, then finally at 8:43 pm the first episode began. It is beyond a joke now.

  6. Nice comment David and Dansdans.
Makes it easier for viewerslike me to decide when 2 showsare on that I could watch – i pick the one that starts on time. aka 8-30 is 8.30
BTW, when did network practice become norm that after 7 Pm it meant shows started 7.34, 8.38, 9.32 etc..but never 8.30 and wh cant we have governing body to pull networks into line re time starts and ads.

  7. good to see 10 updating their epg. however this may just mean that dance will still run overtime and finish at 8.50 whereas underbelly starts at 8.40. this will be better for audience retention and help the struggling good news week.

  8. Does anyone know when Ch 10 is planning on returning the 6 new eps of “Supernatural s4” in March?.

Will Ch 10 be completely Sports free in March/April with the introduction of One HD?.

  9. At least Ten are telling viewers that SYTYCD will run 10 minutes longer on Monday night, as usually networks just let shows run late and don’t bother informing viewers. Being a live show, it ran over this week, so I’m assuming they think it’s best to just make it 70 minutes long.
I believe the Thursday football is only in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth and SVU and Life on Mars will still be shown in Sydney and Brisbane on Thursday February 26th. This is probably why the double episode of Life on Mars will air the following week in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth only, so as to catch up with Sydney and Brisbane.

  10. there’s nothing worse than tv networks running overtime.

But, at least channel 10 has the courtesy of updating their epg on the day to more accurately reflect when shows start and finish. It would be good if they could do this a few more days in advanced though.

As for 7 and 9, well i guess ill have to continue taping 15 minutes overtime just to make sure i don’t miss the end of a show.

This is were duel tuners in recorders come in handy.

  11. at least 10 are being honest and say they are going to stetch to 10 minutes longer. Probably a result of nine running their shows 10 minutes over on Monday.
