  1. When I spoke to the dribit at Channel 9, Don’t care they still show two and half idiots over NRL, or other repeat movies.
The response she gave if channel 7 wasn’t showing a live AF: and melbourne storm are running hot we might just put a game on. This is AFL country and we don’t want NRL. What about other teams like the Dragons Bulldogs or even Brisbane?

  2. Point taken Baggygreen but I was more interested in getting those two sports out of nine’s grubby little fingers rather than the problem of pay tv which sadly I can’t afford.

  3. Problem is fizzen that this still wont fix the anti siphoning problem. Time for the govt to step up and fix this. 90% of sports fans now have Fox anyway.

  4. the anti siphoning list would work in a perfect world where the fta broadcast all sport they own live, but because they seem to be incapable of doing this the only other option is paytv which unfortunately 70% of viewer dont subscribe to.

  5. mb-dog i think your right about the anti siphoning laws, they should be changed, as it’s better for the viewer to be able to watch the nrl on a secondary channel live than at midnight on the main channel, i can understand why it isnt shown on channel nine live in melbourne as it probably wouldn’t rate well so this is a perfect reason to be able to use a secondary channel. they should still show it on nine though for people that dont have digital tv.

  6. its simple….Channel 9 = Arrogance…its the same for their country cousins in WIN Television…they don’t care what people want…like all the networks…rule with an iron fist and don’t care about Jo public, who cares what they want….tells me why Freeview will be a debacle…TiVo hasn’t been fantastically popular…and FOX and Austar have so many viewers…Give all the national sports to the national Broadcaster NRL AFL Union Soccer…just for 5 years…and see if the FTA will listen then…

  7. mac – I think anti-siphoning laws still forbid Nine from showing a sports event on a secondary channel before it airs on the main channel. Hopefully the government will fix this problem in the legislation soon, now that multichannelling is gradually taking off.

As for the Melbourne issue: Nine’s contract with the NRL dictates that it has to start the Friday Night Football broadcast prior to midnight in Melbourne (and presumably Adelaide and Perth as well). It cheerily ignored its contractual obligation to do so for most of last year, but since it’s commencing at 11.50 in Melbourne it looks like the NRL has got its act together and told Nine to fulfil its obligations. But does anyone actually watch the terrible old comedies that Nine shows on Friday nights in non-NRL markets?

  8. wouldn’t it make sense to show nrl on 9hd in Melbourne instead of 11:50 at night on 9sd, just cause Victoria isn’t a nrl state does not mean that there are no nrl fans in Victoria.

  9. Agree with Jellyman – or prehaps they could just do a state-specific channel (fox sports net or something). NRL will never rate well enough to be on FTA in Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth at a decent timeslot – Foxtel is needed.

  10. Well considering those movies sound more interesting than watching this I dont think Melbournians are missing much

Still – something called multichannelling would solve this.

  11. The Storm-Dragons clash has been moved back to its original venue of Olympic Park on March 13 after the AFL moved the pre-season NAB Cup forward to the same venue at the same night. The Victorian State Government asked the AFL to move the game due to the bushfire charity concert at the MCG on March 14. Still, it’s disappointing not able to see the Storm game live or slight delay. Stupid anti-siphoning rules prevent it to be shown live or slight delay on 9HD in Melbourne!

  12. For those who missed the news back in October, the Telstra Dome will be known as Etihad Stadium from 1 March. It takes its new named from Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates.

Regarding the broadcasting of NRL matches live into Melbourne, apart from the State of Origin and the Grand Final, I just can’t see happening until Nine launches their second SD channel.

  13. Once again Nine shafts Melbourne sports lovers.
2 crap movies, then if we are lucky just before midnight before we see game – mind you past few years it has been closer to 1am before game comes on and then edited all over the place
Seems only ABC & SBS really care about true live to air sport.
Seven & Nine are disgrace on Friday nights.
Ten does marginally better on Saturday nights with only 30 mins delay if game played in Melbourne.
