Media and red carpet invitees were out in force last night as Sydney hosted the World Premiere of Star Trek by J.J. Abrams.
Actors Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Eric Bana headed up the male-heavy guests of honour as Aussie television and music names came along for the ride -the first film to screen in the Sydney Opera House’s Concert Hall.
But there are some already asking “where were the crowds?”

If I lived in Sydney, I would have been there, in a nerdy costume… I was insanely jealous reading some of my Twitter friends’ Tweets in the lead up to the screening. Apparently their phones were confiscated to avoid annoying tweeting, SMS-ing and phone calls, so as to avoid any “leaks”. Still… insanely jealous to all those who attended, and even more jealous for those who attended the unofficial premiere in Austin Texas where Leonard Nemoy (amongst others) popped up to surprise everyone!!!
My friends and I were there. Absolutely loved the movie. Zachary Quinto was spot on as Spock. There were a couple of minor things in the film that were perhaps unneccessary, but the look, effects, sound, acting were all fantastic. Plenty of humour as well, which got laughs and applause from the audience.
Comments re: D list celebs also true… spotted Hamish & Andy, Mike Goldman and a few others. There were surprisingly few onlookers, but the media was there in force and it was a lot of fun to walk the red carpet.
Hi Craig
I was at the premiere (got a press pass cause I’m a professional blogger) and while the mainstream media were mostly interested in the Sydney “celebs”, most of the freelance / independent media like me who were invited were definitely sci-fi fans/Trekkies
PS My photos and movie review are at my blog. (safe to view cause there aren’t any spoilers)
JJ Abrams is not a die-hard fan (didn’t even know there had been 10 movies already) so I think in a way its a good thing.
I can’t wait to see this one.
just a note. I wasn’t really the world premiere. That was held “secretly” in Austin where people who were expecting Star Trek:The Wrath of Khan were treated to the new Star Trek
That would qualify as a preview. In the film biz it’s always this way.
I’m sorry, how about you reserve your condemnation until you have seen the movie for your self? I was there at the premier last night and the movie was amazing. JJ has told the story in a way so that the old universe is not disregarded. And lets not forget that this movie is a reboot of the franchise.
Where were the crowds? Had I known it was even happening, I might have been there. The should hire new PR if they want people to attend….
sorry have to agree, totally for the teeny boppers, star trek use to be intelligent the original movies with shatner, nimoy and so on were outstanding, i was waiting for zac efron to pop up and the whole cast to do a star trek idol sing off..
Star trek as u die hards once new it is dead, poor old gene would not be pleased. Is JJ abrams a fan? seems the characters history was not important. sad, makes you feel old when you see these new versions. Think we had the best in movies in the 70s, 80s and 90s now its all special computer effects and no substance storylines. Live long and prosper cause after all its only about money right.
Guys I know it’s a passionate subject but please lean to shorter rather than longer comments. I prefer not to edit for length and let everyone have their say.
It had been my belief for nearly 14 years, and the growing belief of many Trek Fans, that unless they go back to what Gene Roddenberry envisioned, that all Star Trek will become is a pointless action series. If I wanted pointless action, I’d watch Starship Troopers. I would be happy if that wasn’t the case, but the word from someone I know that went to the Opera House was that the Trek I knew for most of my life aint there on the screen. Hell, the fan vids by groups such as Star Trek Phase II, and Starship Farragut are true to the original vision!
A small note, It has been nearly fourteen years since Star Trek won a Hugo in any category – Dramatic Presentation: “All Good Things” (Star Trek: The Next Generation) (Oh to those unaware, the Hugo Award is Sci Fi Oscars.) Maybe its time for Star Trek to take a step back and get the Series back to its dominant past as quality science fiction. And Yes Mike, sad to say you are right on the money with your comment.
JM, Yes, if its up to the current standard, then don;t Do it! And your comment of ‘Im sorry to say but im sure the Studio Bosses werent thinking of “you” when they decided to make the movie. They would have been thinking about the younger audience…. thats where the money is.’ is the whole point here. When Star Trek was done right, it was for the fans, with the hope a wider audience would join in, which is precisely what happened with Star Trek IV ‘The Voyage Home’ still the biggest Star Trek movie ever! The Fans saw it, raved about it, and from that buzz, drew the public in!
Looking forward to the flick but why was the world prem in Sydney anyway? Apart from Eric Bana what’s the Australian connection it wasn’t filmed here was it?
They wanted an iconic building.
@ Mike – D list celeb is better than a nobody like us….. i bet you would have jumped at a ticket to the Premiere whether u admit it or not.
@ Ian – like Dick said you have obviously made up your mind before you have seen it……. would you prefer Star Trek disappear off the face of the earth or would you prefer there to be a chance that a new generation get to enjoy the series…. Im sorry to say but im sure the Studio Bosses werent thinking of “you” when they decided to make the movie. They would have been thinking about the younger audience…. thats where the money is.
I for 1 hope the movie is Excellent…. Great to see SciFi on the big screen again.
A friend who went last night said to me “Set your phasers to fun” – because that’s the movie is all about. Looking forward to it.
Star Trek??? A decrepid remake to capitalise on idiots. Hope it flops.
Good to see d-listers out in force, until the moon goes down and they scamper back into obscurity.
Warning: Spoilers.
After a phonecall on the way home from work last night I scored a couple of invites. Turned the car right around 😀
I would say it’s more of a reboot of the series. Major stuff happens in this movie that you think, “If this is Star Trek now, how can they not have that?”, and some character’s history have changed. But if you’re not too precious about what’s come before, then there’s a lot you will like about the reboot.
@ Ian – looks like you’ve made your mind up anyway but just in case…no you will not like this film 🙂
Chris Pine, imo, was pitch perfect. He didn’t try to do a Shatner, but in the final scenes you heard him throw a couple of subtle Shat inflections in.
Here’s all the things I quickly wrote down about the night before I completely forget. There’s spoilery stuff in here……
Screened in digital. The guy who mixed the film sound set up the sound system in the Opera House. Aussie president of Paramount spoke first, then JJ, then introduced Pine, Urban, Cho, Quinto and Bana, who began to sing. Digital picture so sharp & clear. Beastie Boys ‘Sabotage’ during young Kirk car chase….weird. This is way different than a ‘Star Trek’ film. Lots more action 😀 Kirk and green alien chick…yay! And the slapsticky beaming into the water pipes….totally unnecessary, thinking….does *every* scene have to be a dilemma? Nimoy seems so out of place in this movie but I can’t figure out why I think that. Barrels on to a satisfying ending….Spock saying the famous opening lines over the original Star Trek theme.
Where were the crowds?
Simple, if they were diehard Star Trek Fans they would have stayed away!
This movie, like Star Trek First Contact, and the series Enterprise, are the reason that Star Trek is dying among the fans.
Why? Because those that now own Star Trek have taken everything that Gene Roddenberry created and ditched it, the pre-history that was now taken away by this new movie. All the wonder, the excitement, about Star Trek is gone! Replaced by teenie bopper hype!
Gene Roddenberry once said that the fans were smarter than the Studio Bosses. He was so right.
Oh, just for the record, in the Original Series, Kirk never met Spock until Kirk got command of the Enterprise, and Spock was already serving on the Enterprise when Kirk would have been at Starfleet Academy! Oh, and the uniforms in this new movie are sooooo wrong!
(Yes, showing that I’m A diehard fan, but hey, thats the way my life is!)
I have a question… Who are all these people?
About the only one I recognise is Berretts from Sunrise.
I just wonder how many of the VIPs are fans and how many were there just because they got an invite?
Just 30 days to go….
