The episode triggered the NRL Footy Show‘s Matty Johns to speak about allegations of group sex in 2002, apologising for his role in the act.

Monday’s episode “The Code of Silence” looks at bad behaviour of NRL players”

For much of the past decade rugby league in Australia has been dogged by a series of startling allegations relating to alcohol, women and sex. After every incident the National Rugby League has told the public it’s moving to clean up the game.

Certainly there is evidence that senior officials and key clubs are working hard to change player behavior and rehabilitate the image of rugby league. But are they moving fast enough and is this a battle that can be won?

Now, for the first time, women talk frankly to reporter Sarah Ferguson about footballers, sex and a football culture that turns a blind eye to anti-social behavior that raises both moral and sometimes legal issues. The program looks at a number of incidents involving rugby league players. It reveals details that have in some cases been hushed up by league officials. It relies on first-hand accounts of women involved in these incidents. Until now these women have not spoken out. Finally on Monday night they tell their stories.

“The Code of Silence” will be broadcast on Monday 11 May at 8.30pm on ABC1. It will be replayed on Tuesday 12 May at 11.35pm.

  1. No ‘real man’ (ie. a man who is secure with himself and his masculinity) would support such a violation of woman.

A pack of men, to one women, is beyond pathetic.

  2. Remember she was the one asking hurry up I need someone else to come forward fast duh? Is that not discusting enough?? Women just love to play the victim….. instead why can’t they take responsibility for their own actions.

  3. I think everyone is missing the point of the show, which was to highlight the disgusting culture that the NRL is currently representing. What happened to these women is terrible, but until the crux of the problem, aka the culture of the NRL: drinking too much, disrespecting women, themselves, their families and their clubs is addressed head on, unfortunately, I believe nothing is going to change.

  4. 4 corners forgot to say that this woman would have been paid a lump sum in compensation from ACC as well! Amazing to that a lot of what she says has been coached from social service workers such as saying she felt like a little old lady etc etc etc. Again time women took responsibility for their actions and not just lay it at the feet of the male

  5. The girls a nutter!! She bragged to her workmates about bedding 7 nrl players then 5 days later lays a complaint with the police. Did you know in New Zealand if she could prove rape or abuse she can get compensation in the thousands of dollars from ACC!!. What Mathew Johns and his mates did may not have been right but I bet he has more than payed for it without getting sacked 7 years later. Women need to take responsibility for their own behaviour as well. I’m sure if she had told them to stop or that it was rape everyone of them would have left quickfast!!! Mathew Johns made a mistake and I’m sure he has learnt. As for ousting the other players I am sure the club and the NRL know who they are so why don’t they stand up and be counted!! Don’t let Matthew Johns be the scapegoat…. SHame on you!

  6. Does anyone think that this is just a load of crap, poor matty and his family and poor girl how wanted a good time. I guarantee there are lots more things that we will never know about that has happened in not only NRL but all sports. It takes 2 to tango and if you dont like whats cooking get out of the kitchen….

  7. The truth of the matter is that what happened, happened 7 years ago im sure the guilt of their actions have been following them ever since.if they were sons, brothers or fathers i dont see how they could have lived with their conscious i dont know how its allowed them to go about their business for 7 years pretending nothing happened,we call them stars and the very people who made them stars are the ones striping them of they stardom(media),sports has lost its charm and spirit we have to accept it and go forward. As for john and the fellars they’ll do it again no doubt about it,they are not guilty about what they did or the mental torture they caused they are just upset they got busted and i hope other aspiring stars learn their lesson and learn it fast.shame on you john for your actions i just feel sorry for his wife and family hop atleast they can live with it.

  8. Reading some of the comments on here and listening to some of my male mates coments has raised my awarness of what pigs some guys can be, not all guys but some.
With that mentality rife, its really really scary. Im so glad I do not have daughters as I would never let them out the front door.
To all those people sticking up for the guys who did this and slammed the woman. Grow up.
