Dance act Diversity beats Susan Boyle

After the American Idol fave loses last week, now Susan Boyle is beaten in Britain's Got Talent.

susan-boyle1Britain’s Got Talent global discovery Susan Boyle lost out to a group of young street dancers in the final of the talent show on the weekend.

It makes yet another headline for the show, which has become a You Tube phenomenon this year.

Diversity’s brilliant performance won standing ovations from all three judges, with Simon Cowell describing it as “the only act I would give a 10 to.”

Boyle also received standing ovations for a repeat of I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables, in an inspiring, confident perfomance. It reaffirmed her talent after a somewhat shaky semi-final. The lyrics “I had a dream my life would be so different from this hell I’m living” seemes to sum up her own life. Judge Piers Morgan calling it was the “greatest performance I’ve seen on the history of Britain’s Got Talent — you should win the competition, I loved it”.

In an immaculately-staged production, Boyle looked surprised when the result was announced but graciously accepted the runners-up place saying the “best people won” and wishing the group “all the best”.

But Boyle’s performance capped off weeks in which her every move was scrutinised by media, including a reported tantrum. She thanked all her fans: “I want to thank people for all the support they’ve given me.”

Asked if it was worth all the media pressure, she insisted: “Well worth it!… I really feel at home on stage, I’m among friends.”

The success of Boyle and BGT has redefined the power of marketing on YouTube, which FremantleMedia has willingly employed. With over 100 million hits globally it has also left some to reconsider missed revenue rewards for both FremantleMedia, and YouTube itself.

Boyle will still stand to make a career, and a personal fortune, from her new-found fame. Elaine Paige, Boyle’s hero, has hinted at possibly singing a duet with her, while Andrew Lloyd Webber has also discussed a collaboration. There is even speculation she could land a role in a major West End show. But music industry insiders say her first priority will be an album of songs for Syco, the record label owned by Simon Cowell.

The win for Diversity follows the favourite also losing out in American Idol the week before.

  1. The tens of millions of ‘money can’t buy’ free advertising Boyle has received
from that show (if one looks at how much of it Seven has been screening) and the inevitable Boyle world concert tour, will mean she’ll earn millions (even though she’ll get screwed over in her record deal, as Simon Cowell will profit from that, as he co-owns the show and gets first dibs on any record deal on an act) while the dance act who won will be totally forgotten by everyone in 2 weeks time, so she’s laughing.

  2. I’m glad Diversity won, as they were clearly better, and much more creative and daring than Ms. Boyle, who repeated her audition song for the final (but then again, so did half the finalists). Susan will get her contract anyway, but Diversity really needed the money and exposure. I’m sure the Queen would enjoy something different to the usual acts in the Royal Variety show catered to her tastes.

What’s much more disappointing is the Transatlantic sniping between UK and US viewers. Some of the comments on various sites were uncalled for and totally out of order. Both Susan and Diversity had their pros and cons; does it really matter who won??

  3. There will be a lot of unhappy Susan Boyle fans but a lot of others, including me, found Diversity the best act. They were consistently entertaining from day one, although I found their semi-final performance to be better than their final one. Flawless were also good dancers but Diversity were more creative.
