Is the flavour turning sour inside MasterChef?

It's all been so nice until now, but can MasterChef avoid getting bitchy in the final stages? Minor spoilers.

pohMinor spoilers: It had all been so nice until now. But this week the wheels are coming loose on MaserChef Australia’s pleasantries.

Yesterday ousted contestant Geni Papacostas told the Herald Sun, “People don’t see that – people being secretive and becoming more competitive.

“They (MasterChef producers) are trying to show only what will show the nice personalities for everyone.”

A surprisingly candid remark and not usually the sort of comment that gets past a publicist to the press.

She also said said it was back at the MasterChef house, rather than on the kitchen set, that contestants’ true personalities emerged – and it wasn’t always pretty.

Today Poh Ling Yeow added fuel to the fire regarding tonight’s wedding challenge.

“There were comments being made about me bringing the morale of the team down and that threw me off . . . I think it was done to sabotage,” she said.

“I was in a whirlwind of panic and yelled out for help but no one offered to help. I failed. One wrong move and you’re out of the competition.

“Chris took on the role of team captain and he was a bit stern,” she said. “He also did a few things that was a bit of sabotage and I found it quite unfair.

If there has been editing of contestant brawling it certainly marks a big difference from reality storytelling which usually thrives on this for its main storylines (and some still do).

Brawls have marked some of the noisier reality shows of the past decade, but so far MasterChef has managed to avoid scandal, bitterness and malice. It would be a shame to lose that goodwill as we head towards the final stages of the competition.

  1. Poh and Julie – it hardly seems a fair cook off. Poh shouldn’t even be there! This has been a good show but the ending has let it down badly.

Still, the cookbook is interesting and I have learnt heaps. I would love Justine to cook for me and I would love to eat Julie’s desserts!

  2. I was really sad that Poh was eliminated tonight. I was surprised that she was not even acknowledged for her beautiful work on the wedding cake. I thought she was very talented.

Don’t worry Poh, it’s just a TV show! At least you now have a profile and more opportunities will follow.

Why not combine your artistic ability and cooking talent in a restaurant of your own that features both! It will surely be a winner!

All the very best to you!

  3. when you put a bunch of people that you dont know in a house there will always be fights and bitching you cant really expect that everyone will be nice to each other when they are all wanting the same prize

  4. I knew there would be some bitchiness on the show, it is a competition and money on the line. Sometimes we can tell by some of the contestant’s facial expressions.
Good thing TEN doesn’t show the bitchiness since it is a cooking show. Hope it stays that way until the very end, I just want to watch the cooking.

  5. My first reaction to reading these stories in the papers the last couple of days was:
‘ah, now the publicity department of Channel Ten is trying to play up the reality tv nastiness.’

I think we are all being sucked right in here.

  6. It seems judges pick Chris is to blame and yet TEN make him out to be Mr Nice Guy. Well i hate the guy. I havent liked him from the get go and its bull that the judges like him so much. He is such a tool.

  7. I think the bitchines can be irrelevant. I watch a football game and assume rivallry but I dont want a wideangle shot of conspiring in the bathroom or complaining about the running style of a player.

Masterchef works, I cant stress this enough, on the lack of conflict and the abundance of cooking, ideas in cooking and personal acheivement. My mum watches this show. She stopped watching most reality after the first season of Surviver so to get her back watching something like this is an acheivement and proof that the format is near perfect occasionally getting neer two million viewers.

The producers are doing a good job if they are indeed keeping conflict under raps. The opposite, Homemade, contrives conflict and exploits it to make a program that these days noone will watch.

The show works because there is plenty of cooking challenges and it is cut nicely into an interesting product. We want to see people rise and do well not fall on a heap and breakdown like a dated episode of Big Brother.

My advice to MC, keep the ship steady.

  8. “it was back at the MasterChef house, rather than on the kitchen set, that contestants’ true personalities emerged”

Solution: bring the contestants back to the Big Brother house instead and create a spin off series!!! 😉

  9. I don’t mind MasterChef, but am annoyed that the new Simpsons has been dropped in favour of MasterChef. David any idea as to when Simpsons will be back?

  10. Ok seriously.
    1. Poh is 35 Years old – maybe she should grow up.
    2. Of course there’s going to be rivalry – it’s a competition
    3. Just because she’s been nasty to everyone else doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be nasty to her
    4. When Poh is captain of a team she shoots everyone down – remeber Andre in the hors d’veres challenge? and then she made a mistake herself?
    5. Obviously if she was “failing” she was taking on too big a task like she always does.

Seriously. Grow Up. Get over it. You aren’t there to make friends.

  11. if they start showing more and more of the bitchiness, I’ll lose interest rapidly. Yes people dont always get on, and yes it’s a competitiion thats so close to the finishing line – so people are going to be a lot more conniving etc – but i dont care about that. I want to tune in, see people getting along (even though it’s possibly a lie lol ) and learn new stuff. I still maintain one of the best things about the show is how the judges are not in the same league of judges that you see on other contestant-judge shows – they dont cut people down for the sake of it, and whe they do something wrong, they offer them encouragement, support and quite often show them how they should have watever dish earlier.

I just guess that with with being so close to the finishing line, tempers will flare, people will start being a bi more conniving. At the end of the day, its a competition.

  12. Can someone please explain the format of the UK version and how its so different??

I really don’t want to see any of the bitching back at the house etc. It’s a cooking competition so just show us the cooking. I hope Poh wins, do it for the South Aussies Poh.

  13. Of course there is bitterness and malice – there is $100,000 on the line. Last nights episode was a perfect example of the manipulation fo editing and un-evenness of the competition. There is no way on earth you could put a crumble crust into an oven on a cold tray and remove it 4 mins later cooked. It just can not happen! As for the competition of an amateur competing against a professional chef producing a dish of their choosing that they would have produced a hundred times is ludicrous. As somebody posted on the MC forum, in that challenge plate 2 always wins and the only time a challenger has won, theirs has been plate 2. It is really too obvious and needs to change for the next series if they want to retain any credibility.

  14. haven’t missed an episode even though I’m still not impressed with the format compared to the UK version. However I believe this show is good entertainment for Australia. Hopefully Gen X & Y will become interested in cooking real food.

The editing is very obvious and not always fair to the contestant or the viewer, but (no names mentioned) a couple of the remaining six have been shown to make constant smart comments about their competition…….I guess if you want to be in reality TV then this is what you have to put up with and it is a competition.
Lots of wild speculation going in the Ch 10 forums.

I can’t see why the next one has to be a *Celebrity* Masterchef !!

  15. this is so stupid, its so obvious that there were some rifts bewteen contestants! one of the worst was sandra, and even the contestants said they didnt like her, also the lesbian lady at the start they didnt like either. I think its a good thing 10 are keeping out the tiny bit of bitchy crap they have on footage. we dont need another big brother style show!
