Jeff Goldblum: it’s safe to say ‘hoax’ now

Amid celebrity deaths, some media were fooled by a hoax about the passing of Jeff Goldblum on Friday too.

jg1Now that we know this one isn’t true, it’s safe to acknowledge it…

Yesterday many of us heard stories that Jeff Goldblum had also died suddenly. As news of Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett spread across the globe via the internet, so too did a false rumour about Law & Order: Criminal Intent‘s Jeff Goldblum.

The hoax claimed he had died falling from a cliff in a New Zealand golf course. As confusion and concern over Michael Jackson’s death plagued many of us, it was easy to think there could be truth to the Goldblum rumour.

On Twitter, social networking sites and blogs it spread like wildfire.

On the Today show, Richard Wilkins quoted from a report that said New Zealand police had indicated the news was ‘correct.’

“Everyone who ever came into contact with Jeff Goldblum always said what a good bloke he was,” he said.

Several messages were submitted to TV Tonight on the topic (a decision was made not to publish for fear of simply furthering the rumour).

A similar rumour involving Harrison Ford was also doing the rounds.

Goldblum’s publicist released a statement on Thursday night saying: “Reports that Jeff Goldblum has passed away are completely untrue. He is fine and in Los Angeles.”

  1. I was sitting in front of Today and the computer at the same time and the rumour had been debunked by several credible sources before Dicky had even mentioned it on air.
How I cringed when they brought it up again minutes later.
