Wimbledon guide

Updated: Your guide to tennis this week on Nine. And learn why tennis fans in Perth are seething. Now 10:30pm on Monday.

hewittNine’s lead up to the mens and women’s finals of Wimbledon 2009 is now underway, with more late night sessions from 11:30pm tonight.

Here’s where you can catch all the action this week (please check local guides):

UPDATED: Monday, 29 June Now 10.30pm to 4.00am
Tuesday, 30 July 10.45pm to 4.00am
Wednesday, 1 July 10.30pm to 4.00am
Thursday, 2 July 11.00pm to 4.00am (women’s semi finals)
Friday, 3 July 11.30pm to 4.00am (men’s semi finals)
Saturday, 4 July 10.55pm to 4.00am (women’s finals)
Sunday, 5 July 10.35pm to 2.30am (men’s finals)

But there have been rumblings about some of the broadcast too, particularly for viewers who are not on the East Coast.

In Perth, some sports fans are  practically seething. At perthnow.com.au, one columnist complained about having to wait for The Footy Show to end, only to see footage of a match that had been concluded:

Nine had chosen to broadcast Hewitt’s match from the end of the second set.

The decision would have made sense in the eastern states as viewers would have crossed live to Wimbledon.

But by the time WA viewers saw it, the match was done.

So why not broadcast it in its entirety?

When quizzed on the decision, a Nine spokesperson said it was a simple “viewer consideration” issue: “we put the Footy Show on and took the telecast from the east on Lleyton Hewitt”.

Earlier this year tennis fans in Queensland, South Australia and WA complained that Seven’s Australian Open included delayed matches in the evening.

Please note Underbelly Uncut in Sydney and Brisbane now moves to July 6.

  1. Here we go again…in Sydney tonight 9’s tennis coverage starts at 11:30pm, 1st men’s semi actually starts at 10pm. Why you may ask? Well, because apparently it’s more important to show (on delay!) an NRL match involving Brisbane and NZ (!!!) from 9:30 to 11:30pm.

I rang 9 and asked why…”it’s a programming decision”. They plan to pick up the tennis live at 11:30pm…Tommy Haas may well be in the showers by then!

I defy anyone to make sense of this…

  2. Why can we watch Wimbledon on Fox until early in the second week, then suddenly have to put up with Channel 9/WIN and their pathetic delayed telecast? As for the suggestions to show the tennis on the HD channel – that is all very nice for people who live in the cities. Out here in the woop-woops we can’t get the HD channels. If commercial stations want the rights to sporting events, they should have to show them live (even at the expense of the bloody stupid Footy Show).

  3. It is beyond pathetic in this day and age that a tv channel can get away with treating it’s viewers like this. Why is the government protecting a commercial station by allowing these anti-siphoning laws? My friends in Ireland can watch the Oz Open final live, but because I live in Perth I have to wait two hours???
(Three next year cos no daylight saving!!!!)
Come on people, don’t stand for it. In Ireland, I could watch 5 matches at once on the BBC! Thank God I will be in Queensland for the wimbledon final. Oh, and before you say “watch it on the net”, I would but thanks to Telstra we can’t get ADSL and my wireless is not up to it, but that’s a whole other rant…

  4. Seriously who is this show made for? A lot of money and energy for a 4:30 afternoon news/magazine show for kids and mums who are already at home – and they will be watch B&B anyway.

If Nine want to really do something different and give their news brand some edge, how about giving GTV9 a new news set like TCN9 (that Blue Chroma key was a nice look in the 80’s) and move the news to 7pm when people are actually getting home from work. Do something that makes you stand out from the crowd and give people a reason to watch… This looks like Sunrise Lite.

  5. nine could get away with this treatmernt in 1980 when there was no iternet /paytv…but there is no excuse now in 2009…either give it all to fox/ or for two weeks of the year start the riducluas footy show at 8.30 so they can cross at 10.30pm…why on earth we have to endure underbelly repeats etc!!! Nine suck…or 9HD god there are answers all over the place..

  6. Nine’s Wimbledon coverage is crap…as it was last year. Instead of seeing Hewitt v Del Potro live we had to sit through the usual Footy Show rubbish; Mario Fenech getting dunked in green slime! Tonight it’s an Underbelly repeat instead of Federer v Soderling live. One of the biggest sporting events in the world and this is the treatment it gets…Kerry would be turning in his grave!

This is where the anti-siphoning laws must be reviewed. If a FTA channel buys it they should have to show it or lose it to Fox.

  7. Agai, you can’t use the secondary channel because of anti-siphoning laws. There’s not too much Nine could do. I wouldn’t survive living in Perth

  8. Yeah .. What’s the point of having that HD channel and not use it. It’s not as though they have the excuse “We only have one channel” Clowns

  9. Important matches should be live regardless of time zone.

Maybe the solution in WA is to have the tennis live on a secondary channel then delayed on the main channel? Wouldn’t that get around those crazy anti-sihponing laws? That way the viewer can chose whether to watch it live, or watch the regualr program then the tennis on delay.

Its only the biggets tennis grand slam of the year, and when there’s an AUssie in it, it should do alot better than normal programming, especially on 9 – which only win ratings with event TV now in any case.
