If a finale falls in the woods will anybody hear it?

The finale of the 'biggest renovation competition EVER' is almost universally ignored by media -despite its prize of $100,000.

JASONS~1When it first began promotions, Nine promised homeMADE would be “the biggest renovation competition EVER!”

“Such an emotional rollercoaster,” it declared. “Never before have you seen a show like this!”

As we now know the audience wasn’t anywhere near as enthusiastic. The show was removed from Sundays and struggled to compete on a tough Tuesday night.

This week the show had its finale, with a $100,000 cash prize won by designer Jason. Some 900,000 tuned in to watch the decision. But the rest of us could be forgiven for not knowing any of this. The finale barely made a mention in any press on Wednesday or Thursday.

This has to be the first time a reality show has given away such a major prize to be almost universally ignored by media.

In fact, Nine didn’t even issue a Press Release on the results of the finale, at least, it didn’t have one to forward when TV Tonight enquired.

Instead a photo was issued and a spokesperson referred to the episode being available for free online viewing at its website.

Meanwhile, there was plenty of media for the winner of Australia’s Next Top Model -with a much smaller audience and a $20,000 cash prize, amongst other rewards.

MediaWeek told its subscribers, “You’ll have to search high and low to find out who won the final of the other show that finished last night – homeMADE.” It directed readers to a TV Tonight story.

Seems the promo was right: “Never before have you seen a show like this!”

  1. hardly surprising. economic crisis – people don’t have the money, or are too scared to renovate. now they’re playing with food as a substitute.

  2. I can’t believe Big Brother’s final season rated higher than homeMADE. I watched a few episodes throughout the series and some of the designs they came up with made me feel sick. They did produce some very nice ones, but a lot of the talent was fairly lackluster.

  3. I loved the show … once that annoying female was removed … Darren was so unbelievably hot … but I would let Jason decorate my place anytime, I thought his work was fantastic and the right person won!
    Jack!

  4. $100,000 doesn’t sound like a lot of money to me. It’s hardly worth going through all the stress of a Reality show for that. They give away more than that on a week of ‘Deal Or No Deal’. And $20,000 is even more pathetic.

Maybe they need to look into where the gambling game shows are getting their cash reserves, and do a sneaky swap.

  5. I actually liked the show. However I think Nine shot themselves in the foot with all the constant promo they did whenever you switched to Nine before the show started. I was determined not to watached it based on just that but ended up seeing part of the second episode and quite liked it so having been watching it seen – except so a couple of episodes while overseas.

  6. I actually liked the show, I started watching it about halfway through. I picked up some really good decorating tips, and thought the contestants were very talented. Jason and Darren deserved to be in the final, either of them could redesign my house anytime!
As for top model, I watched the first couple of episodes, with all their promises of not tolerating and bullying or bitching – what a joke. By episode 3 it was obvious that ‘Cassi the bogan’ was a favourite and would go through to the end. I tuned out right then.

  7. I don’t think Nine needed a $100 000 prize for this competition. A $20 000 prize would have be good enough. I love this show, but I can understand why the host/ judges/ contestants could have been annoying to some viewers. I hope Nine will pick this show up again next year with a few format changes. Just cutting a new season of Sea Patrol shorter would fund a show like this.

But why would people like Next Top Model better than this? I thought everyone on this site said that the Australian public were after “nice” contestants this year (like MasterChef), yet Top Model is full of bitchiness/ catfights? The contestants on homeMADE were a lot “nicer” than those on Top Model.

Every time there is an article on Julian and David (the producers of homeMADE, I think), the words “Creators of The Block” always seems to be next to their names. If people remember the Block so well, why don’t Nine just create a new season of that show. It’s ratings were through the roof, and it would be a lot cheaper than homeMADE?
