Masterchef thumps State of Origin, but Nine wins Wednesday

Another series high for MasterChef as it tops 2.23m -but Nine confidently won the night in audience share.

mpThe judges were getting teary, and presumably so was the nation, as Justine Schofield was sent packing from MasterChef Australia last night.

The show continues to surge upwards, reaching another high of 2.23m viewers, defeating Nine’s State of Origin at 1.84m viewers (it peaked at 2.18m).

So far this week the show has been #1 every night, with all but one episode over the 2 million viewer mark.

But the taste was still sweet for Channel Nine which confidently won the night with a 30.4% share ahead of TEN’s 24.5% and Seven’s 23.6%.

TEN was unable to retain the audience beyond MasterChef. Within half an hour Law And Order: SVU was averaging 841,000 viewers. It will certainly be hoping many of them stay tonight for the season premiere of Rush.

The Chaser’s War On Everything, which nodded to the end of the show in 2 weeks time, managed 987,000. So far there is no clear decision on whether the team will mount a new series.

Meanwhile the return of Nine Afternoon News took 237,000, a negligible lift on Tuesday’s THIS afternoon figure of 219,000.

So far TEN still leads the week at 26.5%, but it’s close with Seven at 25.4% and Nine on 24.7%.

  1. Simpsons and SVU rated well in all cities but Sydney and Brisbane.. So had SOO not been on Simpsons would have definitely gotten a good 1.5 or so and SVU probably about 1.2.
Simpsons got over 400,000 viewers in Melbourne and over 350,000 for SVU. That’s pretty darn good!

  2. MasterChef becomes the first program to outrate State of Origin on the same night since OzTAM ratings began in 2001. It beat the pre-match segment of SOO telecast in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Had last night’s MC been a 90-minute episode like the Hong Kong special three weeks ago, SOO would have rated even lower. Looking forward to further stouches between MC and SOO next year.
Nine might have won the night but less people in Sydney and Brisbane watched last night’s dead rubber than game 2 of SOO.

  3. Ten’s post-MC viewer dropoff was probably exaggerated last night because of the Origin effect – people watching Masterchef and then flicking over to Nine just before kickoff. It’s unfair to expect SVU to rate that strongly when it’s up against one of the biggest sporting events of the year.

  4. @ozinoz – It standard practice all over the world because they hope viewer are dumb and won’t change the channel but ITA I watch what I want and don’t watch the next show just because I like the one I’m on…

  5. It never fails to amaze me. TV programming gibbons hoping that the lead in program will translate to increased numbers for the preceeding. Take last nights Masterchef :
“TEN was unable to retain the audience beyond MasterChef. Within half an hour Law And Order: SVU was averaging 841,000 viewers. It will certainly be hoping many of them stay tonight for the season premiere of Rush.” – You watch what entertains and interest you. If you happen to think Rush is a “steaming pile” why would you watch it just because it followed something you had been watching?? But then again, if viewers are too stupid or lazy to hit the off or chanel button, there is not much hope for us is there…

  6. But remember the SOO was a dead rubber so 1.8m is still brilliant. Had it been the decider it would have reached 2.5m. Like most I taped MC and watched Origin.

And as for Justine no I didn’t get teary but did feel a little bad for her. But the end made up for it.

  7. Nine 4:30 News probably had so few viewers because no one knew This Aftrnoon had been dumped, or, those who had switched to Seven at 4:30 for news decided to stay there.
I’m thinking many watched MasterChef then switched to State of Origin for the second half.
