Channel Seven Perth news and weather presenter Jeff Newman announced his retirement on air last nightafter a more than 40 years in television.
“It is a big day,” Newman said. “It’s the announcement of my retirement of course and this didn’t happen overnight, I’ve given it a lot of thought. But someone once said to me a while ago ‘you will know when it’s time’ and I know now is the time.”
Newman has been with Seven News since 1982 as a newsreader and during the last eight as the weather presenter. He is also associated with It’s Academic (1969 – 1979 / 2001 – 2005) and Telethon which he has anchored for 32 years.
During that time, Newman has won five Logies and in 1994 was honoured with an Order of Australia medal for his work with Telethon.
“I never thought about it until now (about retirement), because everyday has been a pleasure,” he told Susannah Carr on Seven News.
“If anybody in television in Australia, let alone at Channel Seven in Perth, has ever earned the right to a happy retirement, Jeff Newman has,” Seven Chairman Kerry Stokes said.

After seeing your smiling face on the weather and telethon all these years Jeff, you will be sadly missed. Enjoy your retirement, keep well to both of you and best wishes.
We will miss you , Mr Telethon
Considering he is about 113 years old he has earnt this retirement. Bye Jeff!!!
I never knew he won logies!
Jeff has been the weatherman for as long as I can remember. I will miss you but its a well deserved retirement.
Logies used to give out “state awards.” Just ask Anne Wills or Jeannie Little.
On ya, Jeff!
