Is this the next Idol judge?

Meet Jay Dee Springbett, widely tipped to replace Kyle Sandilands in Australian Idol.

jaydeeMeet Jay Dee Springbett, widely tipped to replace Kyle Sandilands in Australian Idol.

34 year old Springbett, an A&R Director for Sony/BMG Music, was shown briefly last night in the TEN talent series during a promo for the Top 100 episode.

He is one of several names said to be on a shortlist for the new judging role, and clearly one who has already performed for producers. Working for the record company that signs the winner makes him an obvious choice.

Last night’s show opened with a newly-filmed segment featuring host Andrew G, telling us that Sandilands’ replacement would be announced on the show soon.

Before working at Sony, UK-hailed Jay Dee Springbett was a consultant with Warner UK for the band Artful Dodger, and creative director at Shalit Global Music in London where he has worked with Jamelia and Big Brovaz.

He believes in the Idol franchise, previously saying of former Idol star Jessica Mauboy: “When you start off with a great voice, such as she’s got, the ability to write songs, the ability to connect with a whole vast array of people – I believe she met the Prime Minister this year, and then seeing her just talking to her average fan on the street – she’s got just a grace and style that not many people can encapsulate, you know?”

Last night’s season premiere certainly unveiled more talented individuals and plenty of carcrash auditions which returned the show to its mocking style. Sandilands and guest judge Brian McFadden were both prone to break up in bouts of laughter at some of the wanna-be’s.

The inclusion of ‘home video autditions’ submitted from across the country only served to be used as the butt of producer jokes with snide subtitles about the performances. A surprising inclusion from FremantleMedia, which makes both So You Think You Can Dance and MasterChef Australia.

  1. The problem with the 2 male judges is that we are blatantly told that the best people to find, recognise and foster singing talent learnt their trade overseas. They are basically telling every contestant on this show that you can’t have a career in Australia as we’re a backwater. Marcia Hines at least represents a foreigner who found her fame and a career in Australia – more of those. Delta would have been a better choice for the simple fact she has an international career and lives here. Clearly we’re really only looking for Kylie or Danni Minogues…people who only consider themselves successful once they leave australia.

  2. Agree with some of the other comments. Caught Idol last night on the Web (full episodes there now!) and this guy, in the preview, seemed like he was trying way too hard. Will see.

  3. Q) Is this the next Idol judge?
    A) Only if he’s a tosser.

Could be some reasonable eye candy though. Unless he’s a tosser. Hmm. Whatever

  4. I thought Idol was great last night even if it is just another audition show. We all know the real deal starts when the live shows do in a few weeks. Good numbers too for a show in year 7. Good start guys, good start.

  5. Yeh and Brian ‘Biggot’ McFadden has a great deal to laugh at others for, given he has soo much credibility having come from Westlife, and has a nice haircut, and goes out with Delta. 😕

  6. Completely agree with a lot of the sentiments of the postings – am going to miss Kyle from the show. Last night Kyle was hilarious and while I agree with Ten’s decision to sack him (what other choice did they have? sack him or get criticised by the public?), I think his presence will be missed.

  7. I agree with Nathan, and I’m one of those “I won’t watch Idol until Kyle leaves” people. Well, I watched Idol for the first time since Kyle joined and dammit, it turns out I’m a hypocrite. Kyle was the best of the judges. I’m a Dicko fan but even he was a let down. The judging panel without Kyle on it is going to be very boring indeed…

  8. I’m seriously doubting this .. or any other import. That would make for a panel of three imports: Marsha from the USA, Dicko from the UK and now this guy from the UK too? Nah I don’t buy it. Sure Marsha and Dicko are Aussies now, but surely we can find an Australian Idol judge who’s actually from Australia!

  9. As much as I agree with Kyle’s departure I will miss him from the show. He’s pretty funny and I like his reactions to some of the auditionees and the way he gets involved. I was also surprised at how much I enjoyed Brian being there too. I didn’t think he’d be any good but he was.

  10. I enjoyed Idol last night. And i thought Kyle’s contribution was great. People will prbably bag me for saying this but who cares, i think idol will be alot different without and i think he did have a place on the show. He says what people think and he brings down the serious tone of the other judges. Im not sure if this new guy will lighten things up. Was impressed with B-Mac though…

  11. Hope this guy gets the gig. Was a bit worried when last night they descibed McFadden as the “new guy”, then a slow mo departure for a guest judge? Replacing one tool for another – what’s the point of that?

  12. How underwhelming was Idol last night? And what was with that awful transition graphic they used countless times? it was all so amateurish. And they still showed Kyle prominently, even though they could easily have edited him out a lot more.

At least there are only two audition shows before the Top 100 week.
