Nine News elbows Seven watermark aside

Using competitor footage in News and Sport is not uncommon, but Nine News didn't want to attribute Seven and it wasn't going to.

7newsThe Australian reports today that the in the race for news stories the Nine Network used Seven News footage of an interview with convicted paedophile Dennis Ferguson and ran it as their own.

Using competitor footage in News and Sport is not uncommon under “fair dealing” but Seven is said to be furious that Nine News effectively removed an “Only on 7” graphic, failing to attribute them.

By closing in on the footage Nine elbowed the branding out of the way.

news9Nine even used audio of Ferguson talking to a Seven reporter which it credited to radio station 2GB. The radio station had run the audio but had credited it to Seven.

The story on Ferguson has been a hot headline in Sydney media this week. Almost has white hot as Nine’s hunger to defeat its arch enemy in the battle of the 6pm News race.

Expect Media Watch to be all over the Ferguson coverage next week…

  1. At least we don’t have watermarks like some of the overseas news services. News of the World is one that annoys me, but the worst ever was footage of that Mexican (I think) plane accident a few weeks back where the name of the news channel appeared all over the screen at least 20 times.

  2. This is almost as good as Channel 9 claiming that they were first to break the news that Micheal Jackson had died. This may be true, but what they failed to mention was that they were also first to claim that Jeff Goldblum had died too!

  3. It should be noted that channel 10 fully credited 7 News. Credit to TEN for not playing the dirty tactics of 7 & 9. Don’t think 7 is innocent either. They have done it on many occasions too.

  4. The footage should have been credited even if the watermark was cut, maybe they need to put a big 7 logo in the middle of the screen next time?

@tony that’s an old Mac, worth next to nothing. My sister used to have one, it died years ago…

  5. @paull, i have noticed on cnn that when they use footage from a overseas network that it does in fact sometimes have a watermark in the middle of the picture, one example is a tv station in Pakistan that sometimes has a transparent watermark scrolling across the middle of the picture. although cnn and many other news networks usual have text in the top right corner of the picture saying “courtesy of (insert network)

  6. Simple thing is channel 9 just plagerised the news from channel 7. If I take something from another source in a uni assignment, I have to give credit for it. Same thing should happen in the news.

  7. More to the point – what is that pedophile doing on the old school strawberry iMac DV?? – i have a green one at home! (note to self, get it out and use it!!)

Maybe he is doing stuff on the internet! Hooked up to the NBN! In commission housing! On the dole!

  8. The only thing this is going to do is cause networks to put big ugly watermarks in the middle of the picture, making the focus less about the footage and story, and more about advertising a certain network.

  9. This one we know is 7’s exclusive, but it was never resolved whether it was the channel 7 or channel 9 helicopter that saved that Vic politician from the bushes a few weeks ago was it? Both 7 and 9 claimed it was their helicopter. Could they have been sharing? Doesn’t seem likely!

    1. Andrew here’s my understanding: the spy plane detected Tm Holding was alive in an area the night before. Nine News chopper pilot then found him next morning but there was no reporter aboard. Seven News got there with a chopper with a reporter and phone it into radio, generally enjoying the perception they found him and letting the other media further the claim. On air Peter Mitchell actually said their chopper ‘helped’ locate him. When I checked with Seven they preferred to focus on the good news he was found rather than by whom, which is obviously the main point. Holding also avoided clarification at his press conference.

  10. How pathetic. All the networks are just falling over themselves to be associated with a convicted pedophile, regardless of the fact that this sort of harassment will increase the chances of little children being raped in the future. And the funny thing is, they think they’re better than this guy!

  11. i don’t think there is a problem with chopping off watermarks. if they are chopable they shal be chopped. maybe 7 should invest in a bigger watermark.

but if 9 went out of their way and credited it as their own footage then surely there should be a law against that. especially after 9 ran that 9news promo that drew a red circle around the 9news logo on a 7 news broadcast a few months back. and told us that 7news was inferior because of it.
