Bert remembers Don

"I can't think of anyone who I liked more in the industry," says Bert Newton.

donlBert Newton yesterday paid tribute to the legend of Don Lane.

Having worked alongside Lane on the eight years of The Don Lane Show, Newton remained a close friend of Lane’s up until his death.

Curently performing in the Sydney season of Wicked, Newton says he knew early this week that things were not looking good.

“The thing that surprises me about the success that Don and I had as a team on his show is that before the very first show we hardly knew each other. I think it’s safe to say that on the first show we clicked. You usually take a little while before some sort of rapport or chemistry occurs. I think it came from the fact that we were very different people and also the fact that he was that generous performer.

“All I can say is that I can’t think of anyone who I liked more in the industry, anyone I enjoyed working with, more than Don Lane.”

There are two tributes by Newton you can read in The Age and The Herald Sun.

  1. It’s no big deal seeing Bert without his wig!
He only wears it for Television and Theatre.. and thats where Seven caught up with Bert leaving for the Theatre.
You can see him in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs all the time wigless : )

  2. Today tonight’s tribute to Don Lane was awful – except for catching Bert without the wig – Most of it were just clips filmed off the ninemsn site and youtube…you could see the logo in the top right corner!
