Sharyn sticks with Seven

Brisbane newsreader Sharyn Ghidella has reportedly been at the centre of a network bidding war.

sgBrisbane newsreader Sharyn Ghidella has signed a lucrative deal with Seven said to be worth close to $600,000 a year.

Ghidella, who reads the weekend news, is believed to have been at the centre of a fierce bidding war between Seven and Nine, according to news.com.au.

It notes she was offered the 6pm daily role on Nine to replace Andrew Lofthouse, but the claim is denied by Nine.

“Andrew is doing a fantastic job, we are very happy with his performance,” a spokesperson said. “The Nine Network discussed a multitude of opportunities with Sharyn Ghidella’s management. We believe Sharyn’s decision to stay at Seven is a financial one. We wish her all the best.”

Rumours also tip the former Nine presenter could replace Seven’s weekday presenter Kay McGrath within 18 months.

Seven News boss Peter Meakin said, “Nine did make a big play and we wouldn’t let her go. They lost her in the first place now they want her back and they’re not going to get her.”

Ghidella joined Seven News in February 2007.

  1. Definitely not worth that money. Seriously do people watch the news for the newsreaders or the news? If a regular newsreader wasn’t there I wouldn’t reach for the remote! As long as a person can present well and read the autocues, etc who cares or are people so desperate for a virtual friend these days? The networks shoot themselves in the foot by creating a face for the news then having to pay through the nose to save face!

  2. Just proves how stuffed western countries are.Weather you like Rudd or hate his guts with a passion does anybody really think a taking head newsreader is worth double the amount paid to the Prime Minister of Australia.Even the President of the USA is being paid $160,000 less….real crazy stuff.

  3. People that complain about what they get paid news readers, look at their ratings that is why there paid so much. Dont forget Kay gets out on the ground and reports back, She earns her money.

  4. Thanks shaun and Knowfirst, appeciate what you know. When Tracey left she was expecting a baby, good to know she doing well. I thought she was shafted.

  5. re:buddy029, about tracey challioner she did leave channel 7 3 years ago she wanted to be with her family but with sharyn joining the team back in feb 07 thats where tracey had to move on so I don’t know if she was pushed or just knew they were going to replace her any way I do agree she was a breath of fresh air and will be missed, now about sharyn i do think she is pretty good but as people have been saying kay is great but her time is nearly coming to a end with 30 years with the network but i hope she keeps going for a bit longer.

  6. Hey does anyone know what happened to Tracey Challioner? She use to read the Weekend News for channel Seven before Sharyn Ghidella, Tracey just vanished. I really liked Tracey, never really warmed to Sharyn. Totally agree with not replacing Kay. I hope she not thinking of leaving she is a awesome news reader.

  7. I love Kay McGrath, shes a Brisbane icon but shes getting on in years and would have to be going to call it quits at some point in the near future..Sharyn is surely the natural successor. Kays been around for so long though, I hopes shes given the dignity of parting on her own terms, not like the Bruce Paige debacle at nine when they couldnt get him out the door quick enough. Im surprised Sharyn even thought about going back to nine anyway, she wasnt treated very well when she was there, shafted as Today show newsreader for the boss’s Mrs, overlooked for the hosting gig on Today when she would have been perfect for it, never given prime time opportunities…..

  8. It always amazes me how much importance is placed on news readers. When you break it down they are probably “reading” for about 3 minutes each night (30 min bulletin take away ads, the actual reporters stories, sport and weather) and they just have to read an autocue and smile in the right places. Yet they receive these over the top pay checks and get treated like gods.

I for one wouldn’t care who read the news, I often watch a bulletin and if you asked me an hour later who was the news reader I couldn’t tell you!

Is it just me or are newsreaders totally over rated?
