Neighbours spruces up backlot

Neighbours1Exclusive: Neighbours producers will add new exterior sets to its Erinsborough Village ahead of its 25th Anniversary year.

As a show of faith in the TEN soap, it is taking an extended break over summer to allow the building of new exteriors at Global Studios in Nunawading.

As previously reported the show won another year’s lease on the site following a slowdown in adjacent property development, which had tipped an exit from its long-term home.

A spokesperson told TV Tonight, “As we’re moving into the 25th year of the show, the Erinsborough village is getting a face-lift over the summer break.

“This will be in storyline so can’t give away too much detail just say that iconic landmarks such as Harold’s, Charlie’s and Lassiters will remain, however there will be some distinctive changes in the centre of the village.

“We are also adding a facade of the Erinsborough Hospital and Police Station.”

  1. Is it possible to mercy kill a TV show? I cringe every time I stumble across it. Let me guess- a bomb or yet another fire will be the catalyst for the set revamp. If it were on any other network it would’ve been axed long ago but I suppose as long as the Brits are willing to pay through the nose for mediocre melodrama, it will remain on air.

  2. @damo. I’m Australian and love Neighbours. It is the longest show I’ve ever watched, and at times the only thing on 10 I do watch. To think of a life without Neighbours is just almost unthinkable… it’s always been there, and hopefully always will! 🙂

I do miss people like Harold, Elle Darcy, Billy and Lance though.

  3. Does the extended production break mean that the time between the show being made and airing will lessen? ( I do hope so). It’s always frustrating we I hear of someone leaving or coming back and then we have to wait months to see it happen on air.

  4. Neighbours for me is cringeworthy because I find it ridiculously unrealistic. Practically every male character is a football player, every single character goes to the gym on a regular basis, the houses have far too many people living in them, who are not even related anyway, and everyone is just moving in and moving out all the time, the amount of time the characters spend at the hospital is ludicrous, it seems like the people of Ramsay Street live in a world of their own isolated from the outside, and above all the community is just unrealistically tight-knit. One day I’d like to see a soap opera that actually reflects realistic everyday life.

  5. They do need to fix that set. I hate the stupid water tanks they have – why did they get rid of the Holiday Island pool? I miss that pool.

I hope Neighbours is still going when I’m not. And yes, I am Australian. I’ve grown up with it, it’s part of the tapestry.

Neighbours is vitually invisable in the UK now it is on Channel 5 (although they are paying top dollar for it – about £300million for 10 years – which means it will continue on for years to come). In fact I was speaking to an English person – on the phone from England – the other day who said, “Oh I used to love Neighbours, do they still make it?” That obviously doesn’t speak for a whole nation, more of an anecdote, but symptomatic of being on a channel many Brits don’t even have tuned in on their TVs.

  6. I beg to differ in that I don’t think it’s the greatest show in the universe but I watch. I like it. I am not a pom. Enough said. Oh .. wait … wasn’t it great to see Sunny finally get the heave ho?

  7. Neighbours is the only thing I will happily watch at 6:30pm on my night off from work while doing my exercise sessions.
I would rather see the axing of those crappy current affairs shows over at Seven and Nine replaced with something decent if anything.
If they were to axe the show They would have to resort to importing in a whole lot of New 90210 kind of programming at the expense of local industry and jobs.

  8. Neighbours may not get big numbers but it consistently wins its demos, and lately has seen an improvement in quality. Check the past few weeks of ratings, it is cosistently the 20th highest rated show of the day, and rarely fluctuates.
So they already have a base audience and now they just need to build upon it, as they did with bridgets death and other big storylines…..so its obvious neighbours is far from getting axed
And yes……I do love me neighbours

  9. Great news! I wonder if the vet clinic that the Parkers owned will be replaced with something else? And whatever happened to Toadie’s law firm? We haven’t seen that set in ages. He tends to work from Charlie’s Bar or Harold’s Store these days!

  10. So it’s finishing December 4th right? Does anyone know what date it will come back? I was thinking early January, but now that they said that they’re ”taking an extended break” I’m unsure.

  11. I honestly can’t believe someone would call for the axing of an aussie drama.

I was lucky enough on approx 10 occassions to be an extra in Neighbours many moons ago, and you realise that if they axe it, all these people would be out of work, why anyone would want that baffles me.

I don’t watch the show, but i definately wouldn’t call for it to be axed, a very sad day for the Industry if that ever were to happen.
