2010 Logies: Who didn’t make the cut already?

Sarah Wilson was Presenter on the highest rating show in 2009 -but it wasn't enough to land her on Logie's shortlist. Who else is out of the running before nominations are even announced?

Sarah Wilson was Presenter on the highest rating show in 2009 -but it wasn’t enough to land her on the shortlist for 2010 Logie Nominations.

The Masterchef host is now out of the race for Best Presenter and Gold Logie before the race even begins. But she is in good company.

Yesterday’s list of possible contenders published by TV Week again utilised a voting system it has employed in recent years: an individual numerical code for each actor, actress and presenter as a way of facilitating the results. It contrasts with a historical method used for many years with a blank magazine form allowing a wide-open field. The numerical voting system once again neglects to include an “Other” as it did in 2009.

The Gold Logie nominees will be whittled down from a field of those same actors, actresses and presenters.

But some of television’s big names and quiet achievers haven’t made it past the first hurdle this year in the Popular categories.

They include Ed Kavalee, John Waters, Daryl Somers, Tom Oliver, Ryan Moloney, Dave Hughes, Steve Bisley, Alan Fletcher, Sam Clark, Cornelia Frances, Ajay Rochester, Brian McFadden, Hamish Blake, Andy Lee, Kestie Morassi, James Morrison, David Reyne, Kim Watkins, Tim Ross, Merrick Watts, Andrew Denton, Henry Roth, Jimmy Barnes, Larry Emdur, Kylie Gillies, Matt Passmore, Peter Berner, Peter Helliar, Andrew Daddo, Jonathan Holmes, Cariba Heine, Garry McDonald and Magda Szubanski -to name a few.

SBS telemovie Saved is absent from the Drama category (despite Claudia Karvan on the Actress list). Similarly UKTV’s miniseries False Witness also misses out, although US actor Dougray Scott makes the cut for Actors for the same project. Dirt Game and The Killing Of Caroline Byrne miss out on Drama contention too.

Actress Anni Finsterer got an AFI nomination for 3 Acts of Murder, but is overlooked.

The New Talent categories continue to focus on a handful of possible contenders. None of the Hungry Beast, Jesters or Double Take team qualified. Yet even Charlie Pickering, who co-hosted 13 eps of The Mansion for the Comedy Channel in 2008, makes the list.

Sunrise and Mornings with Kerri-Anne are contenders for Light Entertainment, but Today, 9AM with David and Kim, The Morning Show, At The Movies, TV Burp, Hungry Beast, Collectors, The Einstein Factor, Media Watch and Double Take all miss out.

Shows that are no longer on air, or deemed flops, fare particularly poorly. Australia’s Perfect Couple and homeMADE aren’t on the list for Reality. Jules Lund is noted as Presenter for Getaway and Hole in the Wall (and it wasn’t even on in 2009) but not Australia’s Perfect Couple. Nine’s THIS afternoon is also absent. So is The All in Call and defunct cooking show Fresh. While 20 to 1 is listed The Spearman Experiment isn’t.

Performers in Children’s Television including The Elephant Princess, H20: Just Add Water, Hi-5, The Shak are absent. No Community Television shows made the list. Newsreaders are also out.

Nominations close March 5. You can vote online here.

Here’s who did make the list. Final nominees are expected around late March.

  1. It’s a travesty that Don Hany didn’t pick up the Best Lead Actor award at the AFIs last year. Get to the 2010 Logies voting form to get him, Susie Porter and East West 101 some recognition at the Logies!

  2. I really hope Judith McGrath picks up an award this year or at least gets a nomination. She is a talented actress and after the axing of All Saints, I assume that it would be one of her last chances at finally winning an award?
As far as I can recall, I believe she has only ever received one logie nomation for All Saints? Can anyone confirm this?

  3. Dear TV Week,

Your online voting form is a bit of a nightmare. Please consider displaying all the nominee details on the one screen rather than forcing us to go back and forth with the list. How about photographs or even a progress bar on top so we know how many more steps or categories there are left before we completely give up.

  4. Well you all have to remember that this is run by people who own the Nine Network, well have a strong association with the network. So its not surprising that there are these omissions. I think the lists are a joke. Some of them shouldnt even be on the new talent list. I mean Carrie Bickmore for New Talent? That is so wrong its not funny. The lists are wrong and they should have every single possible nominee available. This is just the work of the people who work for a Nine related Magazine called the TV Week. These awards are now becoming the biggest joke.

  5. Aussie Ladette to Lady, the worst reality show ever produced bar Australia’s Perfect Couple, scores a nomination? Are you freakin’ kidding me??? Pathetic. And where the hell is The Killing of Caroline Byrne? Why was it excluded from the drama category?

  6. I agree with IMO, Hamish Blake is probably the most recognisable face on australian t.v. last year. He should get a nomination.

I would also love to see the Logies morph into something more like the Emmys. That way Aussies can respect Aussie product, which in turn creates more Aussie shows. some of these Logies categories are just a complete joke.

  7. @Jimbo

Who needs The Chaser guys, we should all vote for Anton Enus, spread the word and get as many people as possible to vote for him. It can easily be done nowadays with social networking and word-of-mouth. I’ll be doing my bit.

  8. @ Evan
Sandra Sully for Ten’s late News? (not sure if Nightline on Nine is National)

It would be great if The Chaser guys try get Anton Enus as a Gold Logie nominee like a few years ago 🙂

  9. @bigkev: The Logies did used to separate “soaps” from “dramas” into separate categories but I think now with just 2 titles in the “soap” category they probably can’t justify splitting them up again but also can’t leave them out from “drama”

  10. As reported by TV Tonight (09/10/09), Hamish Blake was named most popular TV personality in Australia, according to a TV research group. In 2009, he appeared on Rove, Spicks and Specks, Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation, The Librarians, The Chasers, Thank God You’re Here, and even Jay Leno, plus 2 specials, American Caravan of Courage, and Regifted. If he was a nominee for Gold Logie, he’d stand a very good chance of winning it. A prime candidate for “Other” and just proves there’s definitely something wrong with the voting system. He should have made that shortlist in some capacity.

  11. Don’t forget the Outstanding categories. Let’s face it, they are the only awards that really count, nominated and voted for by the industry, not a bunch of magazine people who don’t know squat about television.

  12. I really wish that the AFI’s were more prominent than the logies. having so many soap actors competing next to likes of people like Claudia Karvan is a little insulting. No other country considers ‘soap’ as a ‘drama’ like Australia does. Not that there is anything wrong with it, i just think Australia needs to promote shows like ‘packed To the rafters’, ‘Underbelly’ and ‘Rush’, rather than being compared to 15 year olds sobbing about teen pregnancy while entering a surfing competition while they look for their long lost father who is in jail for killing their next door neighbours dog. We really do celebrate mediocrity in this country, while all our damn fine actors are relegated to obscurity. I would understand one category that was ‘peoples choice’….. but not nearly every single one. I know that there are ‘outstanding’ awards that are voted by a panel…. but these are overshadowed by the magazines voting system, which is surrounded by glowing faces of teen heartthrobs.

  13. lots of factuals not there. missing pieces, last chance surgery, the gift, medical emergency, beyond the darklands, gangs of oz, triple zero heroes.

disapointed that larry&kylie didn’t make the list, i might have voted for them.

who decides who makes the list anyway? surely everyone in the category should make the list no matter how unlikely a win would be.

  14. David you did a far more comprehensive list to what I managed last night (see link above). Although some names for the list: Daryl Somers, Lee Lin Chin and (as someone commented on my blog) Les Murray.

The glaring inconsistencies in the categories are a worry. AGT and Idol don’t count for the same category? The judges from some shows (Dannii and the guys from Masterchef) qualify but not others (Marcia, Dicko, JD, Kyle)

  15. Sweet. Thanks for putting this up. I don’t know why Tv Week do this every year – not putting shows or cast on the shortlist. They should really have ‘other’ there.

Also, i think this is the first time that ‘specials’ made it on the shortlist for Best light Entertainment – Hey Hey Reunion and the Hamish & Andy Special made it, while others like Hot Seat, Laurence Leung’s Show and other other shows you mentioned above missed out too

A shame that Dirt Game missed out on Best Drama. Also a shame that Gary Sweet (and others) missed out on Best Actor for his role in The Circuit.

Australia’s Greatest Athlete (and hosts Andrew Voss and Michael Slater) missed out too, as did Les Mrray from SBS Sport. Also, is Anton Enus really Australia’s Best National Newsreader?

Anyway…. at least the Drama Catergory is quite a good one this time around

  16. Yes I noticed a few absenties. Strange Magada should be forgotten about, considering she made the shortlist in 2007.

Saved and Caroline Byrne, wen’t in the drama catergory because they were telemovies I think.

However as usual I think TV Week have their idealistic on who they want to win what.
