Principal Alanis on Degrassi

Alanis Morisette's cameo appearance as the Canadian principal of Degrassi: The Next Generation airs in April.

From Monday Degrassi: The Next Generation will move from its 8pm start time to 9pm on Nickelodeon.

Currently airing in season two, it introduces a new generation of teens going through a new era of the trials and tribulations of a teenager’s life: the break‐ups, the make‐ups, fights, friends and fall‐outs.

Seasons four and five which will air in April, pursue teenage issues including: sexual assault, self image, physical disability, drugs, pregnancy and sexual identity.

Alanis Morisette makes a cameo appearance as the Canadian principal, who accepts Jay and Silent Bob into school, in Kevin Smith’s new movie being filmed at Degrassi. She appears in the season four finale 9pm Thursday April 15, which was filmed in 2005.

Nickelodeon airs all eight seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation this year.

  1. Josie – ABC used to show Degrassi TNG, up until the end of season 3, the same as what Nickelodeon has shown, although they edited episodes quite heavily and didn’t show a few of them. I badgered them for many years, they kept giving the same response that “it isn’t appropriate for the ABC kids timeslot”, which makes Nickelodeon saying that a joke considering ABC showed it at 5.30pm and Nick at 8-10pm.

My little (or not…) rant below.

I’m really disappointed that Nickelodeon have decided not to show Seasons 4+. I can understand why the ABC were unable to show them, and was slightly shocked when I saw that Nickelodeon showed Accidents Will Happen pt 1 and 2, only because I could see complains coming their way, even though it was edited (which ABC received even though it was edited to a short 15minutes), as with Jagged Little Pill which wasn’t shown on ABC and many other episodes which were further edited to follow the 5.30pm timeslot that ABC had.

Nickelodeon are playing the episodes late enough, so why can’t they show seasons 4+ ? I’m now in early adulthood but grew up watching Degrassi TNG and my mother grew up watching Junior High and High but I can’t stress how important the show was in my education. Whilst I learnt things from my parents, Degrassi was able to put it into perspective as I could relate to many of the every day life situations of the characters.

  2. I have seen a lot of the series…it really is great realistic stuff for teenages to relate to. Why is ABC not touching it?
They have Heart Break High rpts on ABC3 at night they could throw this on after, it be a good time for the older kids to watch it without upsetting the littlies.
Mind you when I was little Degrassi was on at 6pm, never harmed me, prob learnt something more than anything.

  3. Finally got an answer: “Unfortunately, Nickelodeon Australia will not be able to broadcast Seasons 4-8 of Degrassi: The Next Generation due to the Mature classification now required to screen these series on the Nickelodeon channel. Nickelodeon will continue to air Seasons 1-3 of the program at its regular timeslot of weekdays at 10pm (earlier in some states) and will explore opportunities to bring you the later series in the future.”

  4. Does anyone know what’s going on with Nickelodeon continuing to play eps of this show? They had two episodes last Friday 19/3, with the second appearing in the planner 3 minutes before it started!

The episodes for this week appeared on the planner last weekend, but disappeared on Monday afternoon to be replaced with Instant Star eps at around 10pm. A single ep (being S4E1) appeared on the planner for Friday 26/3 at 9pm, but last night that disappeared, with episodes now (currently, that is – give it ten minutes) scheduled for Monday night at 10pm – but it’s S4E7!! Where did the other 6 episodes go?

Further investigation this morning via online TV guides seems to indiicate that they are playing episodes at 10pm, just not advertising them or appearing in the planner – so that people cannot record them on their IQs!

Are Nick in the same situation that ABC faced after the Marco/Dylan date episode? I do hope not.

Please David, can you shed any light on this?

  5. That is a great thing with the later seasons the ABC chose not to show of Degrassi and a shame for those of us who don’t have Pay TV.
The last attempt they tried at Teenage Drama was Heartbreak High back in the late nineties when they bought the rights to that off Channel 10 and to be honest compared to anything done by America or Canada or even the Late Aaron Spelling that was the biggest pile of tripe ever created.

  6. Anyone else notice the striking similarity between Zeke’s currently storyline on Neighbours being arrested for breaking into a factory to protest and the time Caitlyn got into the same problem? At least Degrassi did it realistically. H&A and Neighbours could learn a lot from Degrassi.

  7. I miss shows like this.I am not a teenager but in Australia apart from Home and Away or Neighbours unless you own a box set of 90210 or the OC is there anything left for the under 21 market.

  8. I do wish this was back on the ABC.One only has to look at garbage like Home and Away to realise how good the Canadians and Americans are at doing suitable teen drama and quality programming.
Give me a Degrassi,90210,OC,Sweet Valley High,Saved by the Bell and Clueless type of programming anytime over any Australian Clone.

  9. Finally!!!!! I have been wating for season 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 for years. I obtained some of season 4 from other sources, but the occasion episode was a dud file.
I’ll have to remember in April to series link season 4 onwards. I hope they have got more than just season 1-5 in stock.
