Football segment out of bounds

A segment that appeared on Seven's football shows has been dubbed out of bounds by two radio hosts who say the idea was already being used on their show.

A segment that appeared on The Bounce has been dubbed out of bounds by two radio hosts who say the idea was already being used on their show.

“Are You Smarter than a Footballer?” has been used on Triple M Melbourne comedians Jeff Wortman and Paul Hogan who co-host Saturday morning show The Peanut Gallery.

Their segment has been on air since last May.

On Wednesday night it was the title of a similar sketch on The Bounce with Peter Helliar which saw an audience member answering questions alongside 2 players.

Last night it was mirrored on Seven’s new NRL show The Matty Johns Show.

Helliar had even worked at Triple M at the same time as the comedians, but dismissed any talk of ripping off the idea.

“I know Jeff and Paul, and obviously they were at the station when I was but, embarrassingly for me, I didn’t hear their show a whole lot, to be honest,” Helliar told the Herald Sun.

“If we knew there was a segment called that (Are You Smarter than a Footballer?) we probably would have called it something else.

“The last thing we’d want to do is … where we’re knowingly taking people’s stuff.”

  1. How many times have we seen this. Radio thinking TV has ripped off segments or programms. Deal or No Deal which comes to mind was a radio segment now a popular TV program.

  2. The aussie film director Paul Hogan (My Best Friends Wedding) uses the screen name P.J.Hogan so as not to get confused with the other bloke.

Radio Paul Hogan should take note and change his name slightly by just add his middle initial or something. Otherwise too confusing in this internet age.

  3. The Radio host Paul should pay attention to his own ‘plagiarized’ name, I’m sure John Cornell is keeping a keen eye on him for his client Mr Hogan.

  4. Regarding the Matthew Johns Show – i didn’t see the segment as the opening skit was enough for me to know the number of laughs the show would contain.

  5. The radio guys can’t lay claim to the concept- I remember the Footy Show doing the same segment a few years back, just by another name.

If they want to argue about ownership of segment names, i’m sure the guys who’ve copyrighted ‘Are you smarter than a 5th grader’ and ‘Are you smarter than a 10 year old’ would like to hear from you!

  6. So two radio host are upset, that two tv shows copied a idea that they themselves copied? And who says they copied off of them? When i saw the title for the segment. I thought of roves show. So did 99% of people watching the show…probably.

  7. More plagiarised humour!! Scout’s gang shows or university reviews have more orginality and pointed than this stuff. This is lame and desperate.
