Marilyn back in the Bay

Marilyn Chambers, aka Emily Symons, returns to Home and Away tonight as a permanent cast member.

Marilyn Chambers, aka Emily Symons, returns to Home and Away tonight as a permanent cast member.

Symons played the always-vibrant Marilyn Chambers / Fisher from 1989 – 99.

She went on to appear in Emmerdale in the UK from 2001 – 2008.

Her return marks the soap’s concerted effort to lift the tone from grim, police-laden plots to lighter fare.

It airs at 7pm tonight on Seven.

  1. I only watched Home and Away this week for the first time in many years and found it rather enjoyable. This is Awesome.Normally I am a 2.5 men viewer but was getting really fed up with those reruns that have been shown to death many times over.If You Can’t stand Marilyn something must seriously be wrong with you!!!Or you have been living on American Reruns Of Proven Comedies on the Nine and Ten Networks for too long.

  2. The Police Style Plots were enough on Home and Away for most of the long time fans to have switched to 2.5 men or 7pm Project.I can’t speak on behalf of everyone but I see the return to lighter fare a good thing.Otherwise they might as well scrap the show and replace it with Family Guy or How I met your mother the latter being most likely to be the offering at 7pm.

  3. I am glad she is back, it will make things interesting! i am still enjoying it.

Others must be. I was still 4th on the night, and ratyings for all TV shows have dropped, so it isn’t just H&A!

  4. @Peter. Yes, and one of the original producers of H&A was a guy called John Holmes. That’s the same name as an ’80s porn star too. There could be some kind of link there.

  5. No disrespect to the Emily as she was just playing a character, but thank God she left Emmerdale!
Damn she was annoying and it looks like another good reason not to watch Home & Away.

Credit to Emily though as her ‘annoying’ (to some) characters have been paying her bills for quite some time now.

  6. Great to see Marilyn back on air last night. Perfectly timed – the show needs her.

I don’t think H&A is in any long term danger. It lost its way last year with the dreadful boat people storyline, it dragged on way too long. But unlike Neighbours, the show always recognises the errors of its ways and corrects them swiftly.

  7. I think this new style of lighter fare is, lighter ratings. There appears to be a huge dropt his yr and some days it has less than 900,000 viewers.

  8. She was a great comic relief character for the show, although her final appearnces were quite sad as she seperated from Donald Fisher after they lost their baby Byron. Hopefully the writers don’t forget that info. There are very few characters left from her previous tenure, it’s gonna be interesting to see what reason, if any, they give for her return.

  9. how on earth do the writer on this show keep a job, how on earth do they still have a job. i watched the show last night and it’s absolutely dreadfull.

  10. Emily Symons played Marlyn between 1989-1991 when she was enaged to Lance then again in 1995-1999 when she married Fisher, also she had a one off appearance in 2001.

  11. This is great news – always loved Marilyn, she will bring a breath of fresh air into the show.
All they need to bring back now is the fabulous Morag, the old banter between these two was fabulous!!

  12. Awesome. Havn’t watched H &A for nearly 9 years, but the return of Marilyn is very tempting to watch it again. I’ll watch her return and see how i go from there. All those long time H&A fans must be excited….unless they couoldn’t stand her!
