Nine apology after identifying fire victims

Channel Nine has apologised after breaching a suppression order on the names and identities of nine victims in the Black Saturday bushfires.

Nine News Melbourne on Wednesday breached a suppression order on the names and identities of nine people who perished at Kinglake in the Black Saturday bushfires.

“Last night we identified victims of the Victorian Bushfires,” presenter Peter Hitchener told viewers.

“The Nine Network sincerely apologises to the families of those victims for the impact that broadcast may have had on them. It was certainly not our intention to cause distress to those involved.”

A spokesperson from Nine told TV Tonight that human error had caused the identification.

Nine News has also apologised to the Royal Commission and to the families involved.
