ABC News 24 to playout ‘live’ across all states

When ABC News 24 launches mid year, viewers in Perth will be watching shows at the same time as viewers in Sydney.

ABC News 24 is set to be seen ‘Live / As Live’ in all Australian states.

The ABC confirmed the news to TV Tonight yesterday.

The channel’s simultaneous Playout across all states will mean viewers in Perth will be watching shows at the same time as viewers in Sydney.

Whilst not all shows will be Live to air -some will be replays of ABC1 news and current affairs- it will still mean there is equity across all states.

Currently viewers outside of Eastern Standard Time watch shows like Sunrise, Today and A Current Affair on delay. Those windows are extended further when Daylight Saving take effect.

In the realm of a serious News channel this is clearly inadequate.

The move will effectively mean shows such as ABC News Breakfast will air from 4am in Perth and 6am in Sydney.

The new channel is expected to launch around midyear.

  1. Haha! The Piers Akerman Show! ABC News 24 would have to go to commercial breaks every twenty seconds while he gets his thoughts/rantings together.

Looking foward to this channel! Like they do with various ABC1, ABC2 & Australia Network news programs, I hope this can be streamed live from ABC News Online for people at work, uni, etc…

  2. David, any news on the content of this channel? Hopefully it has some opinion based shows like Fox News. It would be great to see some views on issues from a right winger and a lefty to be fair. I think it might be hard to find a right winger at the ABC though. The Piers Akerman Show???

  3. this is great news. i’m tired of seven saying it is the pulse of perth when sunrise and other shows with news content are 2 hours delayed. not that nine is any better. why do we put up with it in wa???? surely they could do something to compensate us….it gets even worse in summer when the news is 3 hours late!

  4. Was never in doubt surely. Wonder though if timings of the Breakfast show at least may be adjusted to account for all time zones – at the least extended by an hour so it isn’t over by 7am or so local time.

  5. What they could do is have two ‘flagship’ news hours… one at 6pm AEST and another at 8pm AEST… that way WA gets a main news hour at 6 AWST.

  6. Great move ABC.
Hopefully News Breakfast will move to to ABC1 at a more reasonable hour for the likes of us not living on the East coast.
More live sport in to WA? Lord save us…

  7. I’m not sure how this will go but I’m glad they’re trying it. I’m in Queensland and even the delay while the southern states have daylight saving is annoying enough, I couldn’t imagine what it’s like out west.

  8. This makes sense. As you say David for a 24/7 news channel it’s the only option.
It follows the CNN, MSNBC and Fox News model in the US and I guess Sky News and Sky Business here.

Hopefully ABC News 24 with have live and original programming 6am – 11pm, with repurposed ABC1 content airing after 11pm weeknights and 7.30pm weekends.

Again, that is how they do it in the US. msnbc ooriginal news programming ends at 11pm weeknights and aboyut 1pm on weekends, and goes to doco repeats.

They get big ratings for these too!
