Christopher Meloni finally answers SVU exit questions

Law & Order: SVU star Chris Meloni says the Courier Mail story on his exit didn't get it wrong, but that "I couched it incorrectly."

Law & Order: SVU star Christopher Meloni has finally spoken out about a story published in the Courier Mail in February in which he said he was leaving the show.

“I think 12 years is enough, a good number,” he said at the time. “The writers will have fertile ground to figure out how to arc him (Elliot) out to another place – whether it’s this world or the next.”

The story was later denied by producers but subsequently confirmed by the newspaper to The Australian. The end result has been one of confusion to onlookers.

Now Meloni has told Us Magazine, “What I said was ‘When your contract is done…that will be the end. Because when your contract is done, it’s usually the end,” he said. “But when [producers] come back to me, you know, we can always talk.’ I couched it incorrectly. It wasn’t [the reporter’s] fault.”

Although the original article was pretty extensive with its quotes, it’s theoretically possible one incorrectly-couched phrase did set journo and subject onto two different contexts. But it’s also interesting it has taken Meloni so long to clarify a story that triggered international interest.

“I had one year [left] on my contract. Our show hasn’t been picked up. Those are the facts of the matter,” he says.

In any case surely nobody wants to see him leave. Hopefully here resteth the burning questions.

  1. I would love to have him stay, but every time he and Mariska Hargitay sign new contracts, they demand a pay rise. Next time they negotiate, I have a feeling they might be pushing their luck.

If the network feels they need to save money by letting one of them go, and considering they get paid the same amount, I’d say Meloni would more likely be the one to be shown the door.

Gotta love the backtracking going on everywhere though.

  2. [read] I’m am open to an extraordinarily over-the-top salary per episode. If he leaves the whole show will have to take a different course, perhaps it’ll be a good thing.
