Doctor Who guests for Sarah Jane Adventures

A former Doctor Who companion is about to reprise the role on television for the first time in 37 years, joined by the new Doctor.

Two guest appearances on the fourth season of The Sarah Jane Adventures have Doctor Who fans buzzing with excitement.

Katy Manning, who played companion ‘Jo Grant’ alongside Jon Pertwee’s Who from 1971 – 1973, will appear longside Sarah Jane Smith, in an two special editions penned by Russell T. Davies. It will be the first time she has played ‘Jo Grant’ on television in thirty-seven years.

The eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, will also make an appearance.

Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith) said, “It’s a fantastic script and I can’t wait to work with another Doctor and hope Matt has fun with us. I’ve known Katy for ages and I am delighted to be working with her. I last met her in LA but this time we will be in Cardiff. LA was good but Cardiff is better.”

Katy Manning, who recently returned to reside in the UK, said, “Playing Jo Grant again is something I never really considered. I was gob-smacked when they told me and I am over the moon. What an incredible little treat. I come home and this is one of the first things that happens.”

Executive producer Nikki Wilson said, “Viewers are in for a real treat, with an action-packed story full of Russell’s usual wit and warmth, which takes the gang inside a secret base beneath Snowdon and introduces brand-new vulture aliens, the mysterious Shansheeth. All this, plus a trip to an alien planet – a first for The Sarah Jane Adventures.”

The Sarah Jane Adventures last aired in Australia on Nickelodeon.

  1. I agree that Sara-Jane has always been “the ultimate companion” to me … I love the Sarah Jane Adcventures! Have to say that, although I adore Katy Manning, all the “work” make her look like a bit of an alien!

What a fantastic couple of episodes they will be!

    Jack!

  2. According to SFX they have done the read-through (although it was on Monday and Matt Smith was busy). One of the pictures put up as a hint to what happens has a very Australian flavour – wonder what that means?!??!

  3. Sydney2K: “Hmmm, Katy Manning no longer with Barry Crocker? If that is true that means… she’s free!”

I certainly hope so as I always love Katy.

  4. @Mydoona: Actually a lot of people care about this, you should see a Doctor Who Forum, it has post upon post of discussion about this, everyone is loving this. You’re probably forgetting that the kids who watch SJA have parents who watched Sarah Jane/Elisabeth Sladen and Jo Grant/Katy Manning when they were that age And there are a lot of fans who found out about the classic series due to the new series.

The Brig appeared, the Doctor and now Jo Grant, it’s a UNIT reunion. Can’t wait for this.

  5. no one cares….she was on the show in the 70’s, people watching the show nowdays didn’t watch it back then…there is a whole new fanbase now…I even said to myself Jo Grant who? I remember Sarah Jane but not her. as well as Sarah Jane being aimed at tweens anyway.

  6. Katy Manning coming back as Jo on SJA came as a big surprise.

In fact SJA seems to become the avenue for old Doctor Who characters to reappear as the Brigadier was in the season 2 final story Enemy of the Bane.

  7. Loved the last cross over with David Tennant and the brilliant Nigel Havers and can’t wait for this one!! Amazing Katy Manning has been back living in the UK long (after a long stint living on the GC and in Sydney!!).
This such a great show for kids (and for their mum’s to watch for them) kind of beats K9 which seems to be languishing on Ten on a Saturday morning!!

  8. Awesome!!!!!!
I love Sarah Janes adventures and this will make it even beter.
Currently, I’m watching the second season on DVD which I bought from the UK and I love it. Season 3 was also great and looking forward to 4 & 5.
