SKY News points finger at ABC

SKY News has accused The ABC's Chris Uhlmann of broadcasting an interview with Kevin Rudd without permission.

ABC News has been accused of using SKY News footage without permission.

SKY News claims The 7.30 Report‘s Chris Uhlmann broadcast extracts from an interview between Kevin Rudd and and SKY’s David Speers without attribution.

SKY News
chief executive Angelos Frangopoulos told The Australian, “The SKY News content used by the ABC was not intended by either SKY or the Prime Minister to be broadcast.

“It indicates that the ABC has tapped into the SKY News bureau feed and has used the footage without our permission.”

The claim comes at a time when relations between the two broadcasters are frosty, with the ABC due to launch its News channel, ABC News 24.

Uhlmann was announced last week as the political editor of the new channel.

UPDATED: A spokeswoman for the broadcaster said: “The ABC concedes it inadvertently failed to seek Sky’s permission before airing a short extract from an interview with Prime Minister Rudd yesterday.”

The ABC was able to obtain the footage because the raw feed of live interviews from the Prime Minister’s office goes through a central hub called the Sound and Vision Office at Parliament House in Canberra. ABC technicians picked it up and recorded the feed from there.

  1. I saw Chris Uhlmann’s story last night & a couple of seconds of Sky’s footage was used as the opening montage to show how much media Rudd was doing that day, selling his health plan. I can see how it might’ve embarrassed Rudd as he was heard singing a bad song, badly, but surely Sky News should be thankful for having their footage seen by more Austalians than usual. Isn’t extra publicity a good thing? Maybe their new business strategy is to purely focus on what ABC News is up to while letting their own channel go to the dogs?

All I see from this is while Frangopoulos fiddles, Sky burns.

  2. A news organisation using footage/stories from another and not attributing it – well I never! As a journo with more than 20 years experience I have never seen that before Ever (and if you believe that I have a bridge I’d like to sell you!).

  3. When will Sky News stop using the resources of Sky News UK, CBS and ABC America and employ Australians to do our own reporting. Sounds like the neigbour is becoming noisier by the day. Roll on ABC News 24. .

  4. This could be interesting to watch. The competition is increasing with Sky obviously trying to spread its international reach – jostling to win the Australia Network tender. It will certainly be intriguing to see how it goes once ABC News 24 starts.

  5. To Angelos Frangopoulos, if ABC using a few seconds of your footage is as you called it “Desperate measures”, then how would you define Sky News using entire stories recycled from Nine and Seven for the last 15 years?

15 years on, and your network still can’t gather or report your own news.

    Desperate measures indeed.

Stop being so obsessed with ABC News 24 and go and fix your own embarrassment of a network.
