Networks getting a roasting from MasterChef

MasterChef was the #1 show on four of its six nights, pulling more viewers away from Seven than Nine, as the latter wins its third ratings week in a row.

Since Easter the television game has seen significant shifts with big shows rolled out and TEN’s MasterChef creating challenges to Nine and Seven. So far it has impacted more on the latter with the cooking show pulling eyeballs away from Seven’s early evening factuals. TEN’s cooking show was the #1 show on four of its six nights.

But it was the Nine Network that won Week 18 in the ratings, its third week in a row.

The Nine Network won with 28.9% over Seven’s 27.9% and TEN’s 22.7%. The ABC had 15.4% and SBS 5.2%.

In digital channels GO! was 3.5%, 7TWO was 3.1%, ABC2 1.6%, ONE 1.1%, ABC3 0.5% and SBS TWO 0.4%.

The Nine Network also won all three key demos 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

Nine won Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday with Seven taking Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Nine was first in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane with Seven again taking Adelaide and Perth.

This week viewng numbers were down on Sunday due to the long weekend, and up on Monday as we settled in for the working week. #1 show of the week was Two and a Half Men with 1.53m viewers.

  1. I fully agree with koverstreet – it is nearing the time for the Nine Network to bring back “Still the One” but in a “We’re the One” format. This would bring back the strong identity that Nine once had. It was far the most successful branding of Channel Nine – pity BTQ 7 in Brisbane did not reincarnate ‘Love You Brisbane” – they need something given the poor performance of DAND and declining audience on news and Sunrise.

  2. MC is getting a lot of credit and for what?.

10 is still a very distant 3rd. 10 still is losing the precious demo’s (that only they and there fans really believe in).

Nothing has changed. The statement 10 (strike that, Master chef) is taking viewers from 7 is overly simplistic to say the least and in my opinion about as truthful as the recent 7pm ratings. Fans of TV (not those of tv networks as so many here are) have been talking about the demise of factuals for quite a time, much as they were about the demise of the overall genre of reality tv. It takes time, but as shown in reality tv over recent years, the dip has begun with factuals.

Myself and a number of others have spoken about the demise of factuals for quite sometime now, including on this site. The trend downwards was there, but 7 chose to ignore it and actual up it’s arsenal of those type of shows and are now paying the price. Throw in underbelly and the continuing success of 2.5 and a few other stalwarts and you have the real reason 7 is currently at number 2. Unless 7 is prepared to bite the bullet and dump 50% of there favorite Genre, than they best settle for being number 2.

  3. i dont get how 9 wins the week in demos when 10 says they won most nights in 16-39 and 18-49. Man we need a way simpler rating system!
How about every lcd tv has the option to become a oztam member

  4. Hate how we’re still quoting ‘network’ wins …. I doubt there’s much crossover with Nine and Go’s audience at all but they’re all bundled together – not having a go at you David as you can only report what you’ve been given but it’s a crock to claim Nine with its older skewing shows is really claiming the hearts and minds of those aged 16-39

  5. With the easter week 2, nine has won 4 weeks in a row.

Also I do not like the reporting of the MC figures, they should have not been averaged, the shows do different things on each night and are of varing length. Shows that do the same thing each night should be averaged, else the top 100 will only list 20 shows.

  6. Nine wins a few weeks and suddenly people are expecting them to wheel out the “Still the One” promos again? Talk about jumping the gun..

  7. I definatley think Nine has improved, and I definatley want to see their “Still the One” promos and ads. Remember that song they had back in 2003/04 with all the shows singing “Still the One!”
As for Seven, looks like your factuals are seeing the light- they’re not that good. People only watch those shows coz theres no real entertainment, until now.

    1. Networks can be sneaky, they code them with OzTAM to suit. TEN would argue the debut week was a separate week of Top 50-style eliminations rather before getting into the main game of weekly cook-offs.

  8. Do people understand these figures are official OzTam figures? David does not pull them out of his a*se, as some of you seem to think…. wake up.

  9. Oh David.. are you prepared for the MC/TEN fans to roast you over averaging the numbers for the week… Let it begin….

IMO Nine really is in control this year so far… even with MC, TEN couldn’t win their key demos for the week.. Goes to show the strength of a network can not be based on one or two strong shows. As for Seven, they really need to have a look at what’s happening before Nine wipes their feet on them.

  10. While I agree that Nine is on the up and Seven on the wane it’s still to early to call anything. But it’s only a matter of time before Nine wins the year again and then I hope they bring back the “We’re the One” promo & “Still the One” if they win twice in a row.
