Jonathan terminated from MasterChef

They are dropping like flies on MasterChef.

Jonathan Daddia survived eight elimination rounds, but it seems he didn’t have a ninth life after meeting his demise in a roasted squab pigeon dish.

Daddia, 33 from Sydney, was the second favourite to be jettisoned in a row. After Marion Grasby was cut last week, Daddia had shaped up as the next favourite.

But the self-confessed ‘Terminator’ was beaten by returned contestants Courtney and Jimmy, as the three faced off in an elaborate dish created by guest celebrity chef Christine Mansfield.

“When they told me I was out I was disappointed, but I’ve had a great time,” said Jonathan. “I’ve been in so many eliminations and there’s only so many I could have endured before being knocked out. I was actually pretty happy to go out the way I did and I thought my dish was good.

“I’m disappointed not to get into the finals week but I’m fine with that – it was more of an ego thing of wanting to get that far into the competition I guess.

“It was hard to know I was up for elimination again,” he says. “But I never was cocky going into any elimination round because you just can’t afford it at that stage.”

With a staggering 75 ingredients in the dish, things went downhill for Jonathan after failing to read the recipe properly and cutting the squab breast to cook separately instead of cooking the whole bird together.

“I carved off the breast which was a mistake so I had to think of an alternative way to cook the pigeon,” he explained. “The tricky thing with squab pigeon is that there’s a real risk you can overcook it quite quickly. It flustered me for a minute and then I got it.

“People think eliminations are about whether you win, but they’re not. It’s about whether you trip up or not and make a mistake. I obviously tripped up because the judges said my pigeon wasn’t cooked as well as it should have been.”

Meanwhile Daddia has suggested that selective editing has been at play.

“What went to air was me describing my dish as ‘bloody brilliant’ but what I actually said was ‘it’s bloody brilliant it worked out’,” he told News Limited.

“I then went on to give them (the judges) five reasons why it wasn’t right, but none of that made the final cut.”

Post-series Daddia hopes to open a French bistro or small wine bar.

His exit again throws open the contest to the remaining 7 contestants.

“To everyone that loved and hated me, thanks for their support and I hope in some way I’ve stimulated their palates and excited them with some of the food I’ve cooked.”

  1. @Mr. Chandler : Matt pretty much said as much on the elimation judging. Can’t remember his exact words but it was something along the lines of “…you keep ending up here and you have to ask yourself why.” I think his time had come.

I agree with ‘S’ flippant summary of Jimmy but Callum also has talent…just not enough gumption and capability to run his own restaurant at this stage. He’s on a great path though. In a few years, I reckon he’d be in a great place.

  2. i don’t know why people are saying jonno is a good cook. he isn’t in my eyes. he a hell of a lot more stuff ups than he made good dishes. people will say he was good because he got through so many eliminations. well they should look at why he was in so many eliminations

  3. There should be no team challenges for the top ten.. end of story… Callum (20) and would look good at your Maccas drive by window .. and he survives because of the team winning.. while 2 of the best leave… and Jimmy (I only cook curries) ..!!! watch now for the decline in the ratings.. I bet tonights show has 20% less viewers….

  4. he isn’t a good cook. he has had more stuff ups than good dishes. it was a matter of time before he got booted and this isn’t a shock too me

  5. Good.. i never liked Jonathan.. he was to arrogant and cocky for my liking.. and if he was such a good cook, why was he always in the elimination rounds?

  6. Now that the two best chefs have been eliminated, it will be interesting to see if the winner – whoever that may be – makes a massive career for themselves as Julie Goodwin has.
She’s the face of so many things, she has her monthly feature in the Women’s Weekly – I just can’t see any of the remaining contestants forging the path she has.
I think Marion will still be the biggest winner from this competition even though she’s lost the Masterchef crown.

  7. The selective editing of MC is becoming a problem. Maybe if they cut out repeating scenes upon return from each ad break as if we had the memory span of a goldfish and showed us more of the cooking ang judging we’d geta better picture of what is actually going on.

I used to think the UK version of MC somewhat staid and boring but I now believe it to be a much more accurate depiction than the stunt & emotion driven version TEN shows us.

  8. finally. he is a terrible chef and i for one would not want to go and eat at one of his resturaunts. too many stuff ups and that’s what cost him and he kept telling everyone he was a good chef. believe me jonno, you aren’t

  9. Jonathan’s book would be one I’d definitely buy. I think it was a substantial shock, but he didn’t follow the recipe to the T. I find it much better for these contestants to get knocked out with these type of elimination rounds than “name the herb” type rubbish.

My money is now on an alvin-adam-courney top 3. That is until alvin and adam are knocked out in the next few days lol.

  10. You know. I Understand Ten thinks it brings excitement to the show, but I think it could stand on it’s own without having to bring eliminated contestants back.

Nothing against Jimmy and Courtney but I think it most unfair for Jonathan to lose against two former eliminated contestants. They had their run and lost.

It would not stop me watching if this attempted audience grab was removed.
