Renewed: Dance Academy

Updated: Funding decisions from Film Victoria indicate a second pirouette for Dance Academy and a new TV series for Judith Lucy.

Updated: ABC’s teen drama Dance Academy has won partial funding for a second series. However, the ABC advises there are still some funding blocks to be put in place.

The dance school drama, which concludes its first season today on ABC1, will see Tara return to the National Academy of Dance with the goal of representing Australia in the world’s most prestigious ballet competition.

Dance Academy is one of several television projects to receive funding from Film Victoria. It also funds another  children’s television project, a television drama series, a telemovie and four documentary series.

The others are Prank Patrol Series Two, the previously-announced ABC drama The Slap and telemovie Sisters of War, a new series for  Judith Lucy (Judith Lucy’s Spiritual Journey), the true story of a former police officer’s quest for justice (Trafficked: The Reckoning) and Arthouse.

Dance Academy‘s last episode airs at 5:20p mtoday on ABC1 but continues in replay on ABC3.

  1. OMG r u seriouse that kat ans sammy are not summin bak!!! wats the point of that?? i would rather they finished it and thats that foreva thats beter then having new casts with new best friends and everythin it just doesnt work like that i will sooooo miss kat shes sooo awesome and this tv show so fits with all these characters!!!

  2. It would be great to renewed it, but I prefer Alicia Banit and Tim Pocock will return for a second year, I mean it doesn’t make any sense if they will have a few of new casts, what the story will be? What about Sammy’s sexuality? Kat’s and others as well?

  3. Dance Academy has a Victorian producer. The creator, many of the writers, cast and crew are Victorian. It was developed in Victoria and all the post-production was done in Victoria. No series belongs one hundred percent to one state. Film Vic put in money to keep post-production jobs in Vic. Screen NSW gave their assistance so it could be shot in Sydney. The series drew a large slice of international money that was spent creating Australian jobs.

  4. My daughter watches it and I am sure apart from the Harbour bridge backdrop that it is a NSW film production. Why would Film Victoria put money into this and not a more local production ?

  5. Great news re: Dance Academy, a really great show with a great young cast. Would probably fit the show better if they aired it weekly, rather than daily, as one season represents one school year at the academy. This first series was over in just over 5 weeks.

Hopefully most of the cast will return (although based on the storyline, maybe Tim and Alicia wont return, with a few of the new first years to join the main cast?). Will be interesting to see what happens with Sammy…a good end-of-season story arc that will no doubt continue into next year

  6. good to see it renewed and a great show.It is the only thing that is not an annoying irritating in your face game show at that time of day

  7. Awesome well deserved this show has to be one of the best produced Australian TV show’s. This kid be Australia’s version of degrassi… if they continue it.
