ABC wins Election Night, but Seven takes the week

ABC wins Saturday's Election Night tussle and takes third place for the week, as Seven wins Week 34.

More viewers turned to the ABC for Saturday’s election coverage than  commercial offerings.

ABC1 won the five-way primary share tussle with a 27.0% share ahead of Nine’s 20.3% and Seven’s 16.9%. With its AFL commitments TEN slumped to a lowly 10.5% while SBS ONE’s belated coverage was just 3.3%. ABC News 24 was only 1.%.

Alternative viewing for Saturday saw 7TWO rise to 8.1% and GO! 6.9%.

Big audiences on Saturday and Wednesday for the national broadcaster helped the ABC defeat TEN in network figures this week.

But it was the Seven Network that won Week 34.

The Nine Network won three key demos 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

Seven won Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Nine was first on Wednesday and Thursday. ABC won Saturday. It also took third place on Wednesday.

Seven was victorious in Sydney, Adelaide and Perth while Nine came home in Melbourne and Brisbane.

Top show of the week was again Packed to the Rafters.

  1. Also, I know that internet viewership doesn’t come into it, but I do really want to thank ABC for having the election coverage on their ABC app. It’s excellent that the ABC has adapted to suit viewers needs. Next what we need is an iView app for the iPhone!

  2. ABC had the best panel and the best graphics.

    Nine had too many graphics and Seven’s were very confusing. Nine had the biggest panel but too many commentators spoil the jibber.

    SBS took a different tact to the others and had a rather uninspiring panel and then had very youth orientated reporters? Ten’s Election Project was very good and it was a shame they had to spoil it by showing AFL. Bill Woods’ efforts after the AFL were heroic for a one man band, but seemed to be on the cheap compared to everyone else.

  3. ABC’s coverage was by far the best IMHO although Stephen Smith would not be my first choice for ALP rep on the panel – he takes far too long to make simple points during live broadcasting. Nick Minchin and Anthony Green were both in top form as usual. I thought Laurie Oakes at times looked quite embarrassed by the “fun” segments during 9’s coverage.

  5. ABC was definitely the one to watch. Why the commercial channels keep pulling out their breakfast show hosts for this kind of thing I don’t know. I switched around for a bit to compare. Nine’s shooting ducks and falling dominos was lame (the shooting sucks was particularly slow and boring), and Ben Fordam (I think it was him, can’t remember now) couldn’t even use the touch screen properly when displaying Twitter comments. I spent hardly any time watching Seven. I watched the Election Project on Ten, and would have been happy to watch that all night (would have been nice to stay with coverage containing an informed comedy bent). Nine kept talking about all the money they had spent – I think their ratings result should be an eye opener that it was pretty much a waste.

    David – do you know if the ABC was a successful on previous election nights (ratings wise)? I wonder if the success of Gruen Nation, Yes We Canberra, and Q&A helped push people towards the ABC coverage too.

  8. 7 was better than nine, only cos I preferred the weird “race around Australia” compared to Nines Bizzare shooting of the political ‘ Duck’. But like both parties it was a race to the bottom for seven and nine.

I worked in the Tally room last night…proud to as well, for the 3 election… I won’t reveal who i worked for but for mine the ABC was by far the best…7 had more bells and whistles and grumpier staff…9 had played down set… Sky News was so so…TEN had the smallest set, and the public was kept well away from Kerry Obrien…so they wouldnt make alot of noise…that was until Bob Brown turned up and the public went very vocal

  10. Not surprised that the ABC won. It’s the one I ended up watching the most.
    Nine and Seven both had shocking coverage. SBS and Sky News were a joke.
    Neither Nine nor Seven should have used their breakfast teams which demeaned the whole thing. The chatter between Mel and Kochie was so inane and Karl just proved over and over again what an idiot he is and how Lisa Wilkinson carries him and the whole Today show. Next time, just leave it to your top newreaders to host.

  11. Both of the commercial networks that covered the election were appalling and I am so glad that the viewers showed some sense and tuned into the ABC. I switched to CH 9 and 7 once each for a few minutes only to see “breakfast TV drivel heads” attempting to cover an event that will truly effect the Australian people.

  13. I was a little disappointed to see the networks, ABC included, cutting the little ‘media conferences’ short. (eg. Kevin Rudd in Griffith, Bob Brown in the Tally Room, etc).

    Other than that, I found ABC’s coverage to be flawless.

    Surprised Seven’s coverage rated so low, it was far superior to Nine’s anyway.

  16. Watched ABC almost exclusively last night. Briefly surfed to Seven & Nine at times but the tacky graphics and in-your-faceness of them made their coverage look more like a telethon than an election. I agree with Reg, tho, Nine’s was easily the worst. Early on I tuned in to see bombs dropping onto targets and wondered who the hell had come up with that. Bizarre. Meanwhile back on ABC, Antony Green’s expert analysis ensured they stayed leaps and bounds ahead of the commercials, as could be seen by their advanced calling of the seats right throughout the night.

  17. Some positive signs for abc news 24 with weekly share slowly climbing. nine’s coverage last night was pathetic. Graphics overing over half the screen. I thought chris bath did a good job with her ‘state of play’ segment on 7. ABC coverage was outstanding as always. no one can beat the knowledge and expierence of antony green. Well Done to everyone in canberra who did >6 hrs live to air without commercial breaks.

  18. It seems like all the major networks still don’t own HD cameras, it was shocking picture quality.

    As for ten, their ‘election project’ was a winner for me, I was really annoyed they had football on because honestly, as that 10.5% share shows, no one watches football on election night. The game should have been on earlier in the day.

  19. I kept flicking from channel to channel but found myself watching ABC News 24 as it gave accuratelty the correct amount of seats won. Like seriously every channel had a different number of seats for each party. Like on 7 they said Labour had more seats but were predicting Liberal to win, while ABC News 24 provided the right amount of seats, and reasons why it looked like Liberal will win instead of 7’s “guessing” method

  20. I stuck to ABC and SkyNews, surprised ABC News HD didn’t rate better, maybe people forgot about it. And ouch for TEN, I guess more people were interested in the election that a game of foot ball.

  23. Not at all surprised that the ABC won – it provided quality coverage as always.
    The commercial networks were thoroughly disappointing with coverage provided by breakfast TV hosts. Nine’s coverage in particular was awful, every time I tuned in Barnaby Joyce was shouting at someone.
