Hamish and Andy quit daily radio

Hamish and Andy look set to step up their TV commitments after announcing they will abandon their daily radio.

Austereo comedy duo Hamish and Andy look set to step up their TV commitments after announcing they will abandon their daily radio show for a two-hour weekly show and podcast in 2011.

They will end their current 4pm-6pm format on November 27.

“We’re looking to challenge ourselves,” Hamish Blake told listeners. “We could never entirely walk away from this show.”

Andy Lee said the move would allow the duo to pursue other opportunities they have turned down during the past 5-7 years.

TEN, which has previously thrived from their specials, is due to announce its programming for 2011 in mid-September.

Programming chief David Mott has previously said, “It’s no secret Hamish and Andy are the most keenly sought after television talent around.”

  1. Story in Sydney Confidential in today’s The Daily Telegraph says:

“But their agreement with Ten ends in November and they’re keeping all options open while still recording a two-hour podcast for 2DayFM each week.”

So they might not be at Ten in 2011.

  2. The Age Green Guide reveals today that Austereo re-signed Hamish and Andy for next year after rival Nova tried to poach them. The duo were believed to have lunching with Lachlan Murdoch, chairman of Nova owner DMG Radio.

  3. These guys are more suited to radio, than TV.The segments on Rove were good but for them to do there own thing, they have proven they can’t do it

  4. @Chris: as an h&a listener I can tell you that it’s not their humour that has me tuning in, rather it’s their people skills ie they’re ability to relate to and include the listener- this is demonstrated from their simple phone topics, to their caravans of courage and frank Stallone promoting. For h&a to survive, they can’t rely on humour, rather they would go a lot better as hosts of variety shows or even a talk show.

By the way, anyone else an Frank Stallone fan now, thanks to Hamish and Andy? I certainly am, took me a couple of weeks before I was convinced to download ‘Far from over’ and love it, but also the other tracks on his albums.

  5. one of Derryn’s listeners phoned him up on his show to break the news to him… I think Derryn (as much as he is a great supporter of H&A) will be grateful that they will be on the radio a little bit less as they’ve been thrashing him in the ratings for the last few years!

  6. I’ve always thought they were overrated. There’s little substance to their ‘comedy’ (Roundhog Day?) and they’re often quite grandiose but they obviously have built a following on radio (where the audience has lower standards than TV) that has resurrected their TV career. Then again, their failed show was on Seven who suck at light entertainment.

  7. The best hosts on TV now are the humble ones… Carrie Bickmore, Daniel McPherson, Gary Meighan…
Is Aussie TV ready for egos again?

How are they egotistical? What I love about them both is the fact that they are both really down to earth guys! They just talk about their everyday lives- hell, Hamish still lives in a share house, they get their mums and Hamish’s mum on the show, their humour is usually based on their own self-confessed stuff ups. The last word I would use about them is egotistical!

  8. Agree with Paull – TV hasn’t proven to be their best outlet. The taped stuff they did on Rove was awesome but they were only on every few weeks and it prob took that long to make it.

  9. Why would they do that? Don’t you make more in radio? I remember reading something about Kyle only making $1 mil off his TV commitments but he makes $4 mil a year off his radio show! I would stick to radio.

  10. i hope they’re picked up by 10 and not the other 2 fta stations. 7 would make it comedy hour with all their stars on their network and 9 would just make it rubbish like the nation with mick molloy

  11. It’s been good of them to stay with arvo radio for so long, and even for them to offer us listeners/ podcasters the consolation prize of 1 day per week.

However, I still don’t think they go that well on tv, hamish is a bit annoying on camera, always trying to talk over people and constantly crack funnies, whereas on radio that kind of behaviour/ personality works quite well. I think they should have continued with the show, for at least 2 more years, I don’t see a 1 day a week gig lasting that long.

  12. They were obviously getting underpaid. Considering they went national got SAFMs best ratings they deserved more money. I don’t know if they underplayed it but considering both of them were renting they obviously weren’t earning much.

Maybe I’m wrong but that’s the way they make it seem.

  13. I remember their first TV show, where it was summarily rejected by Australian audiences. Now they’re sought after, even though their sense of humour hasn’t really changed that much. Funny how that works.

  14. Financially it seems an odd choice, but they must be bored telling the one joke every day. I know I am. They are far better as TV performers IMHO.

I hope they don’t get John Laws to replace them. (We’re naming random unlikely replacements here, aren’t we?)

  15. I heard this on radio today and i was shocked.

i mean, what will i llsten to from 4-6pm daily for 4 days a week.

i hope they don’t bring back that stupid duo of peter hellier and judith lucy where she tried to become the face of spuds in australia….remember that?

that was just painful…that was before hamish and andy came along and thank god they did
