2.8m for AFL but Nine wins the week

2.8m viewers watched a draw between Collingwood and St. Kilda, but played out of primetime, Seven watches Nine take the week in ratings.

The AFL Grand Final netted the Seven Network a whopping 2.8m viewers -but it wasn’t enough to win Saturday night. Nine’s primetime NRL match (1.03m) gave it the win on the final night of the week, with the network taking out Week 39 in ratings. In truth Nine was already just ahead for the week anyway.

But such an anomaly will again put pressure on the AFL to shift its Grand Final from afternoon to twilight, a move it is declining for next week’s replay. At the moment the match ends before primetime begins at 6pm.

By comparison the 2009 Grand Final averaged 2.87m.

  1. @daqua_99 I believe that is a good measure, I am assuming you’re in NSW, so the same applies to us in VIctoria, when the AFL GF is on here, Supermarkets are dead, when the NRL GF is on in NSW the same applies (and vice versa for eachs view on the other code).

  2. I highly doubt that the AFL will get anything above what they got for this final in the one next week. I believe they Sydney viewers will halve as their ‘one AFL game a year’ is over and they don’t care enough to watch it again.

My view in the supermarket I worked in – 2:30 it was normal levels, 7pm onwards (time of the NRL game) it was absolutely dead.

  3. To Clarify: By saying: ” Cannot see it making much difference Primetime Saturday for the AFL.”

I meant the ratings would likely be about the same if it was on Twilight Time Live.

It being on mid-afternoon in WA rather than Midday, would maybe balance out the losses from Brisbane and Sydney, sure it’s make a difference to 7, as the ratings would count to Primetime figures, however they wouldn’t drop or go up much.

However, cannot see the AFL changing the time of a Grand Final to suit a TV Channel in the near future, with new Teams in the Gold Coast and Western Sydney, no way would they want to lose viewers to an NRL Final (which would be on at the same time).

  4. the replay won’t be3 in prime time thank god., it will be a the same time as yesterday. 7 wanted a night gf, but we all know the reasons for that. the afl have done the right thing by telling 7 to shove it where the sun don’t shine

  5. they will for sure get 4 million +. the last time they had a replay they had massive figures. as long as 7 don’t butcher it, they will get big numbers and there won’t be any pre game entertainment.

  6. @Mark: Nine won Saturday because of big audiences in Sydney and Brisbane for the thrilling NRL preliminary final between the Dragons and the Tigers, which the Dragons won 13-12.

  7. Cannot see it making much difference Primetime Saturday for the AFL (at least in Vic), go out for a drive after 2:30pm on Saturday and the Streets are pretty much deserted, it’s like a scene in a Nuclear Holocaust Movie (one of the best times to go grocery shopping, barely a soul in the Supermarket as well).

Ratings in Vic would remain much the same I think, in WA not so sure as if it started at 5:30pm it would be 3:30pm in the afternoon rather than 12:30pm as is now, I believe there’d be a big drop off in Sydney and Brisbane though, Adelaide would likely remain similar.

Evening/Twilight BBQ’s at Mates Places would be nice for the AFL GF though, rather than in the afternoon or after 7pm.

  8. No way will it get 4m more likely the same or a bit less.

As for a night GF no thanks. I may be a traditionalist but I prefer the atmosphere of a day GF and everything that goes with it.

  9. They certainly would not have got 2 Million to watch if it was in Prime Time this week, at least half a million viewers would be wiped from the Northern States and the other caps would lose viewers given Saturdays are generally the lowest rating PT night of the week. Plus I’m sure the majority of the fans would like the game stay at Saturday Afternoon (the crowds would back that up)

  10. The AFL will have to move it to prime time? Ridiculous. The AFL can schedule the game whenever it wants, if Seven doesn’t want to broadcast the Grand Final at 2:30pm, then I’m sure the AFL can find somebody, somewhere that would be willing. Seven knew when it would be held, and they (and their partners) still forked over $800 million for the rights anyway.

The fact of the matter is, while it may not count towards the ratings, being in primetime, doesn’t mean that they won’t get just as much money for the GF ads as they would have gotten in prime time, because ppl pull sickies to stay at home and watch the game.

The NRL holds its GF in prime time and still doesn’t get nearly as much money for its rights. Good on the AFL for sticking to its guns and running the GF in the traditional timeslot. There are plenty of other finals games in primetime to make the networks happy.

And Seven is in no position to complain either, Two grand finals for the price of one. They should shut up and be happy with just how lucky they were that it happened in their year.

  11. How did Nine win the week?? GO! must be helping the network a lot! This weekend is shaping up to be a tight tussle between the NRL Grand Final on Nine and the AFL Grand Final (Part 2) on Seven. Go Nine!

  12. It doesn’t matter If the game is in primetime or not. Those who want to watch will watch whenever the game starts. If fact if the game was at twilight or night time it may get less viewers as lots of people may be out

  13. If the AFL wants a truck load of money rather than a bucket full then they will have to allow the move to twilight/night, otherwise they may just get a tea spoon full.

  14. @Mr. chandler – I seriously doubt it and it won’t count ratings-wise anyway.

I’m sure they’ve already tried but the networks should get the AFL powers-that-be to see the commercial sense in playing the match in the evening.
