Karl’s comedy under fire

Updated: It wasn't Karl Stefanovic that Bra Boys' Macario De Souza was talking about at all, but Kyle Sandilands.

There are some who love Karl Stefanovic for his wayward sense of humour, but Bra Boys co-director and surfer Macario De Souza isn’t one of them, labelling the Today show host a “W****r” after an on-air gag.

During a giveaway segment on the show yesterday Stefanovic telephoned a viewer and rewarded her with $5000 when she correctly answered with the catch phrase, “I wake up with Today”.

When the caller said she lived in Maroubra, Stefanovic responded: “The boys will be around to take their fair share a little bit later”.

DeSouza told the Southern Courier the remark was disrespectful to the band of locals.

“I think the worst part about it is that it paints a bad picture of us that some of the younger kids then try and mimic, so people don’t know how much damage it really does,” he said.

“Also a lot of the older guys are busy with their lives and families and work… times have changed and we are moving on and this sort of thing can make that tough.”

UPDATED: An odd footnote to this story….. A later report says Macario De Souza believed the comment had been made by Kyle Sandilands, whom he was referring to as a “W*****r.” Embarrassed, he now says of Karl Stefanovic, “Knowing he’s a joker and a friend of ours, I don’t think it’s too bad.”

When he is focused and interested he is a good journo / presenter, but the dribble and stream of consciousness that he feels compelled to add to his role makes him more often than not look like a wally! If it weren’t for Lisa and Georgie, I would not watch Today. It is, for me, infinitely preferrable to the phony antics over at Sunrise. Too forced and artificial.

  3. Today are trying to hard to beat Sunrise. They just need to face it, they won’t. Karl is likeable on some levels and seems like a good bloke ( most of the time), he also has a good sense of humour.
    Lisa on the other hand – Cold and robot-like. Cannot watch her.
    Sunrise ftw.

  5. I’m a fan of Karl – from him turning up ‘drunk’ after a Logies party, to him brilliantly mimicking Miley Cyrus, to his support of the Australian police, and now this joke about the Bra Boys…I think he’s just a bit cheeky and sure he’s a bit of a w****r sometimes, but his comments are spot on.

  7. Haha! I like Karl. He almost makes me wanna watch Today sometimes. I remember “The Boys” demonstrating their sense of humour on The Chaser a few years ago, compared to Karl who laughed along with their gags about Jessica Rowe. I know who I’d rather hang out with…
