UEFA Champions update

SBS’s coverage of the UEFA Champions League sees some of football’s biggest names, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Wesley Sneijder.

The UEFA Champions League heads towards the business end of the competition when the group stage matches get underway Live on SBS this September.

With 32 teams battling it out amongst eight groups, the group stage sees some of football’s biggest names, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Wesley Sneijder, take to the pitch.

SBS’s coverage begins with the Group C clash between Manchester United and the Glasgow Rangers live on September 15. The day’s other match will see last year’s UEFA Super Cup winners Barcelona take on the winners of the Greek Super League, Panathinaikos.

On September 16, nine-time UEFA Champions League title holders Real Madrid will go head-to-head with four-time champions AFC Ajax LIVE, in what is deemed to be one of the toughest groups in the competition. Last year’s runners up Bayern Munich will take on Italian side Roma in the day’s other game.

SBS will also stream several matches LIVE online at www.sbs.com.au/theworldgame, giving football fanatics even more UEFA Champions League action. On September 15, catch Dutch side FC Twente as they line up against defending champions Inter Milan, while the following day you can see Italian powerhouse AC Milan battle French side AJ Auxerre.

The World Game’s Craig Foster, Les Murray, David Basheer and David Zdrilic will be covering all the UEFA Champions League action, including the week’s match highlights in the UEFA Champions League Hour, 10pm each Thursday on SBS ONE.

SBS will also broadcast the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. On Friday September 17, Spanish side Sevilla will take on Paris Saint-Germain before three-time title holders Liverpool do battle against Romanian side Steaua Bucuresti.

All the UEFA Champions League and Europa League action will also be covered on The World Game, Mondays at 9:30pm on SBS TWO, with LIVE streaming online at www.sbs.com.au/theworldgame and replays on Mondays at 11:30pm on SBS ONE. The best match of the week will also be shown on Les Murray’s Football Feature, Sundays at 11:00am on SBS ONE

  1. @Coca: ESPN also has rights to show Champions League in Australia. ESPN and SBS decided last year to co-ordinate the telecast arrangement so that they won’t show the same match in the group stage and final 16. That means there will be some matches that will be shown on SBS only and some other matches that will be shown on ESPN only.

  2. Up until now SBS had been showing qualifying games for the Champions League. I had assumed that this was a build up to their full coverage, in which they’d show every game – but from this article it sounds like they’re only showing a few games? Am I wrong?
